Why We Love This Place Wednesday: Community Church Vacation Bible School

By Terra Avilla

Ahoy, parents! It’s that time of year again when our little kiddos trade in their video game controllers for Bible verses and parents get a few hours of blessed quiet.

That’s right, folks – it’s Vacation Bible School week at Community Church, and this year, they have truly pulled out all the stops taking a deep dive with an “Under the Sea/Scuba” theme!

whywelovefeatureblock image

The sanctuary has been transformed into a ocean, complete with colorful coral reefs and vibrant sea creatures. So don’t be alarmed if you hear strange bubbling noises emanating from the church – it’s just Pastor Floyd practicing his scuba breathing for the daily skits. (I’m pretty sure he’s been binge-watching “Finding Nemo” for inspiration.)

Maybe you grew up, like me and had no idea about Vacation Bible School. That’s okay. It wasn’t until my adult years and having kids at church when I realized what a true treasure to our community it is.

VBS is a fun camp which provides an intensive period of biblical learning. I did the math and one week of camp totals about fifteen hours of discipleship in a single week. That’s basically the equivalent to approximately six months of regular Sunday school.

Additionally, VBS serves as an open invitation to those who might not otherwise step into a church to participate in this welcoming, family-friendly event (i.e. you don’t have to go to church to have your kiddos participate!)

And let’s not forget the lasting impact. Years from now, these kids will be teenagers or grown adults and suddenly have the urge to sing “This Little Light of Mine” at the top of their lungs. That’s the power of VBS memories.

There is just something so heartwarming about watching my girls in their blue VBS shirt amidst the sea of other little kids… being kids. Playing games, making friends, and learning about God. What a great gift this is to our community.

I could not write about VBS and not speak to the volunteers and church staff it requires to make this happen. A big round of applause for our VBS volunteers who’ve mastered the art of turning animal crackers, pretzels, and fruit snacks into biblical life lessons.

Who knew Noah’s Ark could look so delicious floating on blue Jell-O?

So, here’s to another successful year of Vacation Bible School at Community Church. Where else can you find such a perfect blend of spiritual growth, creative chaos, and the sweet, sweet sound of children belting out “Jesus Loves Me” at the top of their lungs? It is, and will forever be, one of the reasons I love where we live.

Weather Bulletin: Fire Weather Watch

Issued for Today in Lassen County

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Fire Weather Watch in effect this afternoon and evening as they expect gusty winds and low humidity in Surprise Valley and across eastern Lassen County.

Winds are expected to be west to southwest at 20 to 25mph with gusts up to 40mph.

Low humidity, with a minimum of 13 to 17 percent, will add to the fire danger for 3 to 6 hours this afternoon and evening.

The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions.

Fireworks Cancelled and Auto

Races Moved to July 6th

It’s a difficult situation. Pyrotechnic companies throughout the state of California have either moved to another state or they have been absorbed by one company because of rising insurance costs, fire restrictions and the lack of certified pyrotechnicians. It’s these issues that have led the Lassen County Fairgrounds’ current fireworks show provider to notify them that they will not be able to bring us our traditional show this Independence Day.

“The Lassen County Fairgrounds Fourth of July Auto Races and Fireworks show has been a proud tradition spanning decades in our community,” explains Fair Manager Kaitlyn Midgely.

lassenfairfireworks image

“Each year thousands of people have come down to the fairgrounds or set up lawn chairs in their own backyard to enjoy the event, which is why it is with such a heavy heart we have to announce the discontinuation of the Fourth of July Fireworks.”

Midgely explained that on February 29th, an official Request for Proposal was flown for the Fourth of July Fireworks show. The RFP ran for two weeks and received no formal bids for this event.

“The Fairgrounds is currently working on alternative dates for a fireworks display. The community will still be able to enjoy auto racing surrounding the weekend of Fourth of July at the Diamond Mountain Speedway.”

Midgely said that the Fair is extremely grateful for all the volunteers, sponsors, firefighters and community members who helped and supported this event over the years.

“We are saddened to be ending this tradition but hope to be starting a new one.”

Auto Races at the Diamond Mountain Speedway, originally planned for the 4th, will be held on the 6th of July, with the grandstands opening at 6:00 and racing starting at 7:00. Admission is $5 for everyone.

Lassen Land and Trails Trust Holding

Annual Summer Nature Camp for Kids

Now is the time to sign up the young explorers in your life for a week at Lassen Land and Trails Trust’s Nature Camp, for great outdoor adventures and learning.

During this day camp for eight to twelve year olds, children discover all that make their Lassen County home unique.

Each day at camp, staff and regional natural resource professionals take campers hiking, climbing, swimming to learn about the hydrology, wildlife, ranching, and farming heritage, botany, archeology and geology of our region.

The curriculum is designed to complement the state’s core curriculum for elementary school. Organizers describe the Lassen Land and Trails Trusts’ Nature Camp as ‘hands on’ learning at its best.

Registration is only $125 per child; this includes all transportation fees, lunch, and snacks for the day! A limited number of scholarships are available for families who qualify.

If you would like to donate to the scholarship fund, please call the Trust at (530) 257-3252.

Susanville Man Convicted on Seven Counts Related to Stolen Firearms

On June 11th, after a jury trial in the Lassen County Hall of Justice, 43-year old Susanville resident William Michael Trujillo was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and six counts of possession of stolen property. The stolen property consisted of a variety of firearms.

The case was tried by Deputy District Attorney Don Brand.

According to Lassen County District Attorney Susan Rios, who announced the verdict, Trujillo was also found to have committed these felony offenses while he was out on bond for one or more other felony offenses.

Gas Truck Driver Averts Tragedy

June 26, 1937

The quick action of Don Gott, truck driver for the Union Oil company, this morning prevented what might have been a tragedy when the truck he was driving turned over spilling gasoline, after colliding with a car driven by Richard Edenholm.

The minute he felt the impact, Gott turned off the ignition key.

Although both cars turned over after meeting at the intersection of Roop and North streets none was seriously injured. Edenhokm was taking several friends picnicking.

The truck escaped damage but the car owned by David E. Edenholm, father of the driver, was badly smashed.

It Takes 30 Days To Find Out Judge Means His Words

George E. Williams, 33, learned last night that Judge N. V. Wemple of Lassen county does not confuse the words “suspension “ and “dismissal”.

It was a costly lesson for Williams will spend 30 days of his life in the county jail after being arrested for the second time in two weeks for being intoxicated and disturbing the peace.

He was brought to the Lassen county jail last night by Sheriff Olin S. Johnson on the charge of violating the same sobriety ordinance which caused his arrest June 24, and resulted in a 30-day suspended jail sentence.
