Boy Scouts build barn owl boxes for Blackwater |
CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge Boy Scout Troop 209 spent part of a weekend busy at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge mounting barn owl boxes and laying down gravel.
The scouts, with the help of their parents and Blackwater’s biologists, replaced two barn owl boxes and added an extra box to the refuge on Feb. 25. They also added more gravel to a ramp to level it and improve accessibility to a photo blind located off Wildlife Drive.
Boy Scout Keegan Hulett, 14, is on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout and this project is a step toward that achievement.

Bay Bridge Eastbound Deck Replacement Project | |
On October 27, 2022, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Board approved a $140 million construction services contract for a portion of Phase 1 of the Eastbound Bay Bridge Deck Replacement project, which is expected to begin major construction in winter 2023/2024 with anticipated completion in spring 2025. Consistent with MDTA’s 2015 Bay Bridge Life Cycle Cost Analysis, the deck replacement in the deck truss spans is the first phase in a series of projects during the next several decades to maintain safe and working order conditions for the 71-year-old span. The timing of future phases and other projects will depend on available funding and bridge conditions.
Phase 1 of the Eastbound Bay Bridge Deck Replacement project will include the replacement of the deck floor system, barrier upgrades, structural rehabilitation of the steel superstructure, lane use signal gantry replacements and utility relocations, as well as off-site stormwater management work.

Guided Birding Tour at Blackwater
Get outside this winter and spring by participating in a free guided birding tour at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy identifying and learning about the many species of birds that inhabit the refuge. Throughout the winter, waterfowl and raptors, including bald eagles, are plentiful, while spring brings in migratory warblers and shorebirds.
Participants meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. for each tour, which may last 3 to 4 hours. The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various points around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive. Binoculars and field guides are highly recommended for an enjoyable experience. There is no fee or advanced registration for these tours. For further information, please call the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 410-228-2677 or visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.

Excellence in Quality of Life Awards
The Excellence in Quality of Life Awards recognize community partners — hospitals, medical providers, healthcare industry, and other organizations — that share our goal of enhancing the quality of life of our patients and families. These organizations and healthcare professionals are not only paragons of standards of care in their own right, they also share our mission of promoting dignity and quality of life to those facing life-limiting conditions. In the frame of our 44th Anniversary, Coastal Hospice invites you to honor these partnerships. Vote for the nominees and celebrate with us, by attending and sponsoring our first Excellence in Quality of Life Awards. Join us as we celebrate 44 years of partnerships and excellence in care of the lower eastern shore.

TidalHealth's Free Bariatric Seminar
Start your weight-loss journey today
Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.
These informative sessions, focusing primarily on surgical interventions, also present a pathway to the medical weight loss program for those who find surgery isn’t the right fit for them.
TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.
Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.
The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.
Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.
To register, call 302-297-2412.
