March Synod Listening Sessions

Pope Francis, regarding the Synod on Synodality, is inviting the world into another round of listening sessions. Seeing synodality as a model of the Church and for the Diocese of St. Cloud is one of Bishop Patrick Neary’s priorities. You are welcome to join him at one or more of these sessions to share your thoughts, experiences and concerns of Church life, leadership, and structures as we continue this journey of synodality. Participants will engage in small group discussions throughout the morning. This is a bilingual event. Lunch will follow the in-person sessions — a free will offering is appreciated. Registration is required. Visit www.stcdio.org/listening2024 to register.

Fr. Tom Knoblach ♦ Vicar for Health Care Ethics

Vicar for Health Care Ethics

I apologize that the link provided for the Catholic Health Care Directive from the Minnesota Catholic Conference did not work for some. The resources can be found by going to the MCC's website, mncatholic.org, clicking on the Educational Resources tab and then, in that menu, clicking on End of Life Decisions.

Please continue education and advocacy around the issue of physician-assisted suicide. The "End of Life Options Act" (HF 1930 / SF 1813) remains one of the most expansive and potentially harmful legislative proposals on this practice nationwide. You should have received easily shared materials from the MCC.

Vicar for Clergy

On Feb. 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released “Gestis Verbisque,” a Note on the Validity of the Sacraments. The document addresses the essential necessity to avoid changing the matter or form given by the Church in the administration of the sacraments, and adopting the Church’s intention in their celebration. Fidelity to the liturgy as the Church establishes it is an act of mature humility, lest the faithful be deprived of the valid celebration of the sacraments of the Church. The document was initially published in Italian but English translations can be found online: https://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_ddf_doc_20240202_gestis-verbisque_it.html.

  • Home and hospital visits and calls
  • Educational offerings to Church members and/or the wider community
  • Connection to community resources
  • Care group facilitation
  • Baby blankets and prayer shawl ministry
  • Mental health care
  • Blood pressure screenings
  • Parenting classes
  • Support of clergy and ministry leaders
  • Evidence-based wellness workshops
  • Volunteer coordination
  • Much much more

Scholarships are available. Early bird and group discounts are also available.

Pastoral visits with Bishop Neary

We have received positive feedback from the pastoral visits with Bishop Neary. Highlights include: the process of preparing the presentation, celebrating liturgy together, visiting with the bishop, having time to talk with others from another ACC and share experiences.

In January, we welcomed the ACC teams from WOHVn in Faith, Parishes on the Prairie and the Isanti Area. Summaries, PowerPoints and handouts are available online on the diocesan website. We look forward to welcoming the ACC teams from Centered on Christ, Come to the Water and Four Pillars in Faith on Feb. 28.

The goals of the visits are threefold:

  • To build bridges for a thriving mission across parishes in an ACC.
  • To develop ACCs as learning communities through listening and dialogue.
  • To offer radical hospitality to nurture relationships between Bishop Neary, the diocesan pastoral team and ACC pastoral leadership.

This effort is a collaboration between the Diocese of St. Cloud and Bridge Builders for a Thriving Mission Initiative.

Save the date!

Aug. 9 – Attention all priests — the Planning Office will host a clergy day on planning from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Saint John’s University. More details will be coming soon.

Linda Kaiser ♦ (320) 251-2340

Thank you to the Catholic Schools and the parishes that have recorded the number of students trained this year for safe environment. I continue to check each week to make sure each parish and school is recorded. I realize that many parishes train with other parishes. Sometimes I may have to ask which parish some of the numbers belong to. The auditors will sometimes ask those questions and it is good to be prepared to have a response.

It is a good idea for site administrators to check their site(s) each month to make sure all employees and volunteers are up to date. I appreciate all the effort everyone is doing to keep all children, youth and vulnerable adults safe and the database as accurate as it can be.

Chrism Oil Orders: Distribution of the sacred oils will look different this year. We ask each pastor to send one delegate from each parish to the chrism Mass. In the back of the cathedral will be a check-in table. When the parish representative checks in, s/he will be given a card with the parish’s name and the parish’s order for oils. Following the chrism Mass, each parish representative will pick up the oils in the lower level of the cathedral by turning in the card with the parish’s name/order on it. This representative would them present the holy oils during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. If extra oils are needed for the parish community, please complete the order form found at https://forms.gle/j6eSRPmmFk25RzCc6.

Chrism Mass Choir: Anyone interested in singing for the chrism Mass will need to attend the required rehearsals from 9 a.m.- 11 a.m March 9 and 16. at the Cathedral of St. Mary. If you are interested in participating, please contact Anne Cota: [email protected] or call (320) 251-1840

Preregistration is encouraged so music folders can be prepared ahead of the first rehearsal.

Easter Candles and Multiple sites: The Office of Worship has had the following question sent in: What is the procedure for blessing an Easter candle for churches where there will not an Easter Vigil?

The Secretariat for Divine Worship suggests that the candles from mission churches or other parish churches in clusters/ACCs/parish families could be present at the Easter Vigil, having been prepared in advance, and blessed alongside the main paschal candle (perhaps having deacons or other representatives holding them. In keeping with the rubrics for the lighting and procession, only one candle should be lit (the principal one, or the one which will remain lit in that particular church). As the other candles in the congregation are lit, the other paschal candles could be likewise lit and held (but not high, in order to maintain the prominence of the one principal candle) by someone at their place in the assembly. Once all the candles are extinguished after the singing of the Exsultet, the other paschal candles are put aside. On Easter Sunday morning, those candles could be taken to each of the other churches and carried lit, in the entrance procession at the first Mass at each church and placed in the sanctuary.

Time for Easter Vigil: Since the Easter Vigil is to take place when it is entirely dark outside, the Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 30, may not begin earlier than 8:30 p.m.

Adult Confirmation: There will be not be a special liturgy for adult confirmation this year. All adult confirmations will take place in the parish/ACC. Adults to be confirmed may be confirmed during the confirmation liturgy for the youth or at another liturgy (during the Easter season would be a most appropriate time or on Pentecost).

TV Mass musicians and presiders needed: The TV Mass is one way the diocese connects with parishioners who cannot participate in their parish liturgies. The success of this ministry is dependent on the generosity of our musicians and priests. The TV Mass taping schedule and sign up is available on the TV Mass website athttps://www.stcdio.org/worship/tv-mass/. There is always a need for priest-presiders and musicians as this ministry occurs every other week year-round. Please review the dates and sign up for any that work for your schedule. Contact Sister Jeanne in the Worship Office if you have questions at (320) 251-9068.
