Dear Shawnee UMC Family,

Please join us this Sunday for Worship

in-person or on Facebook Live at 10:30am.

The Scripture for Pastor Phyllis' message will be:

Hebrews 4:14-16

Jesus the Great High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The Tuesday Lectionary Group invites you to share some of your favorite scriptures, which we will then share with all members.

Please email them to:

maryann13fenstermacher@gmail.com.

Here are this week's scriptures for study and meditation:

Psalm 130:5-8 I hope, Lord. My whole being hopes, and I wait for God's promise. My whole being waits for my Lord—more than the night watch waits for the morning; yes, more than the night watch waits for the morning! Israel, wait for the Lord! Because faithful love is with the Lord; because great redemption is with our God! He is the one who will redeem Israel from all its sin.

Ecclesiastes 2:11-15 But when I surveyed all that my hands had done, and what I had worked so hard to achieve, I realized that it was pointless—a chasing after wind. Nothing is to be gained under the sun. My reflections then turned to wisdom, madness, and folly. What can a king's heir do but what has already been done? I saw that wisdom is more beneficial than folly, as light is more beneficial than darkness. The wise have eyes in their head, but fools walk around in darkness. But I also realized that the same fate happens to both of them. So I thought to myself, What happens to the fool will also happen to me. So why have I been so very wise? I said to myself, This too is pointless.

Proverbs 25:26-28 A righteous person giving in to the wicked is like a contaminated spring or a polluted fountain. Eating too much honey isn't good, nor is it appropriate to seek honor. A person without self-control is like a breached city, one with no walls.

Matthew 13:53-58 When Jesus finished these parables, he departed. When he came to his hometown, he taught the people in their synagogue. They were surprised and said, “Where did he get this wisdom? Where did he get the power to work miracles? Isn't he the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother named Mary? Aren't James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas his brothers? And his sisters, aren't they here with us? Where did this man get all this?” They were repulsed by him and fell into sin. But Jesus said to them, “Prophets are honored everywhere except in their own hometowns and in their own households.” He was unable to do many miracles there because of their disbelief.

Galatians 1:11-18 Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that the gospel I preached isn't human in origin. I didn't receive it or learn it from a human. It came through a revelation from Jesus Christ. You heard about my previous life in Judaism, how I severely harassed God's church and tried to destroy it. I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my peers, because I was much more militant about the traditions of my ancestors. But God had set me apart from birth and called me through his grace. He was pleased to reveal his Son to me so that I might preach about him to the Gentiles. I didn't immediately consult with any human being. I didn't go up to Jerusalem to see the men who were apostles before me either, but I went away into Arabia and I returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days.

CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES

Old Shawnee Days is fast approaching! The City’s theme this year is “A Day in Shawnee”. We are tying into that theme with a salute to the men and women of the armed forces. As Shawnee welcomed our troops home, so does SUMC.

We will be decorating our float on Friday, June 7th starting at 6:00pm. We encourage members to join us to help and have fun and fellowship.

For those who want to walk in the parade – meet us as we line up (likely along frontage road by KFC on Shawnee Mission Parkway) anytime between 9:30 and 10:00.

If you are a Veteran, we need you to ride in the parade – either on the float or on Bill Bloom’s military vehicle. You would meet us at the Church House/Annex on Saturday morning between 8:45 and 9:00. No walking needed!

Please reach out to a member of the Parade Committee – Mary McCoy, Nancy or Bill Bloom, Kevin or Christine Schneier, or Cindy or Shane Gentry so we know who is coming.

BOOK CLUB

Our next book club meeting will be Thursday, June 27 at 1pm. Susan Ozga will lead the discussion of Beautiful Country by Quain Julie Wang.

July 25 book selection is Lincoln’s Battle with God by Stephen Mansfield led by Pat Franz.

Everyone is welcome!
