April 1, 7pm, Boardroom: Roundtable on Arlington Politics & Governance
Want to get involved with local politics, but don't know how? Care about Arlington issues, but not sure who makes policy? Join a roundtable discussion about how decisions get made in Arlington, and how you can contribute.
We'll learn from UUCAers Tenley Peterson —chair of Arlington’s Planning Commission since 2019, with a previous 8 years on the Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission— and Melissa Benn, 6 months into her stint as a Climate Change, Energy, and Environment (C2E2) Commissioner & Election Official.
| | We are reaching the end of the month, but it is never too late to make your gift or your pledge! This year, we have heard from many of our members and leaders about why UUCA is so needed right now, as a community that provides refuge, resistance, and resilience in uncertain times. If you are able to give financially, please use this link to make your gift or pledge. If you are also facing personal uncertainty, your presence is a gift to us too! | |

Spark: A Theological Convocation
Shaping our shared theology, moving toward collective liberation
April 3-5 at UU Fairfax, Oakton VA
The Convocation will provide an arena to reflect on Unitarian Universalist theology in a setting separate from denominational business or governance discussions. We will gather in person in order to embody the theology we are trying to discern.
Through a combination of panel discussions, keynote speeches, and interactive discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to share in collective acts of ideation and discernment and to help shape our shared UU theology for the years to come, with all of their challenges and opportunities.
Spark organizers hope participants will take these conversations home to their local congregations or regions, where the questions can take on further life - ultimately for perennial and sustained theological conversations across Unitarian Universalism that provide opportunities for covenantal understanding of mission and imagination.
Did you attend Seminary for a Day? Or maybe you wanted to, but couldn't? This is an excellent continuation for some of the work and discussions started there. Learn more, see the speaker line up, and register here: Spark: A Theological Convocation

Poverty, by America
Author: Matthew Desmond
DISCUSSION GROUP @ UUCA –
April 13, 2025 (After Sunday Service)
With all that is going on in the country, let us not forget the story of poverty in the US, and the role we all may be playing.
The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages? In this landmark book, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond draws on history, research, and original reporting to show how affluent Americans knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor. Those of us who are financially secure exploit the poor, driving down their wages while forcing them to overpay for housing and access to cash and credit.

COME TO GUATEMALA JULY 8 – 17:
Come with other UUs July 8 – 17 to deepen our congregational ties visiting Rabinal, Guatemala, where we partner with ADIVIMA to support the Maya Achi people in their struggle for justice. We support accompaniers who work with local people, including accompanying them into court over the disappeared people from their town, and reparations concerning the building of the Chixoy hydroelectric dam and subsequent genocide, among other challenges. As a congregation, we also support scholarships for local middle and high school kids to attend school instead of working in the fields. The trip includes opportunities to visit scholarship students in their homes and schools, and other forms of learning and cultural exchange. In the past, our congregation, including ministers, has found such trips very meaningful.
We recently got word that our partner church, JUC in Colorado, is organizing this trip. Logistics are still being worked out. The deadline to commit with a $200 payment is April 15. To express interest and obtain JUC’s trip flyer, contact Barbara Locklin (blocklin3@gmail.com, (703) 400-9382), or Marcia Trick (marciatrick@gmail.com, (703) 801-9841.
