PPEL Vote March 5th

A voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) is a voter-approved levy that generates funds a school district can use for infrastructure and equipment repairs, purchases, and improvements. Funds may be used only for these purposes.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Linn-Mar Community School District voters will consider renewing the voted PPEL through 2035 at the existing rate of $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable property value. This levy must be renewed every 10 years to allow the district to access these funds. With a renewed PPEL, we would continue to address our facility and equipment needs, including:

  • School security system improvements
  • Technology purchases
  • Repairing and replacing roofs
  • Maintaining our HVAC systems
  • Replacing school buses
  • Additional key facility projects

A voted PPEL is a cost-effective way to continue protecting the district’s assets and ensure our students are provided with an exceptional learning environment today and in the future.

Mail-in and in-person absentee voting is now available. A mailed absentee ballot can be obtained from the Linn County Auditor’s Office after completing a request form. All ballot requests must be received by the auditor’s office by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 19. Ballots must be received by the auditor’s office or ballot drop box before the polls close at 8 p.m. on election day to be considered for counting.

In-person absentee voting at the auditor’s office will begin during regular business hours on Wednesday, February 14, and end at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 4. Voters will need to show a valid ID before casting their ballot. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day. Voters can find their polling locations at https://sos.iowa.gov/elections.

Your Input Matters - Every Student Succeeds Act

The Iowa Department of Education is seeking input from the public on the state’s proposed updates to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) accountability plan. The state is required to update its ESSA state accountability plan because the goals and targets do not reflect the current performance of students and parts of the plan do not reflect current practice.

In designing a new system, the Department has conducted extensive modeling to ensure the system is rigorous, reliable, and fair. Department leadership conducted initial consultation with all superintendents at each of the nine regional superintendent meetings, nearly 400 curriculum and instructional leaders, members of the State Board of Education, executive leadership of major public education associations, and AEA executive leadership.

Informed by that robust consultation, the Department made multiple updates to the initial proposed changes. A statewide survey is the next step in receiving broader input. The feedback will inform any final updates before the Department submits the accountability plan to the U.S. Department of Education.

Please provide Feedback on the proposed ESSA state accountability plan.

Changes will be collected through Feb. 2. All comments will remain anonymous.

Linn-Mar Celebrates 75 Years!

Historic Highlights:

Excelsior Middle School

Another chapter of our great district!

In March of 1993, voters approved a bond issue to allow for the construction of a 5th and 6th grade building to be named Linn-Mar Intermediate School which opened in the fall of 1995. In 1999, following the completion of Westfield Elementary, the intermediate building was expanded and became Linn-Mar Middle School serving grades 6 through 8.

When Oak Ridge School was built in 2003, Linn-Mar Middle School became Excelsior Middle School. It was named after one of the district's original one-room schoolhouses.

Hazel Point and Boulder Peak opened to serve grades 5 and 6 in 2020. Excelsior and Oak Ridge Middle Schools became 7th and 8th grade buildings.

Winter Weather Reminders

Please remember to update your contact information in PowerSchool to receive notifications regarding weather-related schedule changes. If you need help with your PowerSchool account, please get in touch with your school office for assistance. Decisions will be made by 5:30 a.m., when possible, for late starts and cancelations.

Cold:

If the actual temperature is -15 or colder, school will be delayed or canceled. If the National Weather Service issues a wind chill advisory that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there may be a two-hour delay.

  • A wind chill advisory means that wind chill values are expected to fall to between -20° and -29° F.

If the National Weather Service issues a wind chill warning that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there will be a two-hour delay.

  • A wind chill warning means the wind chill values are expected to fall to -30°F or lower.

If the wind chill warning is in effect beyond 11:00 a.m., classes will be canceled.

Heat (and Cold):

The district has an energy-saving agreement with Alliant Energy to shut down power on the main campus should temperatures become too extreme (cold or hot). Buildings that would be directly affected by a power shutdown are Linn-Mar High School, Excelsior Middle School, Indian Creek Elementary, and the Learning Resource Center.

Snow:

School will be canceled if heavy snow and/or icy conditions make it exceedingly hazardous or impossible for school buses to travel their routes and/or for students and employees to report to school safely. Decisions and notifications will be made by 5:30 a.m., on the morning of a cancelation. As a general practice, all activities are canceled unless otherwise noted.

These general guidelines are subject to change at the Superintendent’s discretion. Each weather situation will be assessed independently.
