In 2024, Family and Community Resources entered into the Hearts and Hands for Hope Partnership with the Associacao Cabo Verdiana de Luta Contra Violencia Baseada no Genero (ACLCVBG), a domestic violence agency in Praia, Cape Verde. The purpose of the partnership is to create a better understanding of domestic violence in both American and Cape Verdean culture, so that advocates in both organizations can better serve survivors.

In order to build this bridge, FCR is hosting two advocates from ACLCVBG for the next three months. Our guests are shadowing Domestic Violence advocates and our Intimate Partner Abuse Education Program, to gain critical insight on how FCR’s policies benefits our clients and can improve the services they provide in their agency. They are only a few weeks into the program, and they are already seeing the benefit.

  • "Back home, the survivor does tremendous work to fix themselves, but the perpetrators remain the same and creates new victims. By using my experience in the program here, I can find a way to adapt this program in Cape Verde. It's a way to help both parties and also stop domestic violence.” - Virginia Mendosa, ACLCBG
  • "At FCR, there is a very strong partnership between the Brockton Police, City Council and other partners. This is a point that I will certainly take to Cape Verde, that is, to try to sensitize the political power and beyond, to make available a budget line or financial resources so that the ACLCBG can implement its activities successfully." - Isalda Dos Santos, ACLCBG

The program will also help FCR with our work in Brockton, as the staff members working closely with our guests point out that:

  • “Domestic violence has been normalized in the Cape Verdean community - a culture where they teach you that you need to stay in unsafe situations and fight for your family. When Cape Verdeans move to the United States, they bring the same mentality with them. Now this is a unique opportunity to help show it is ok to leave.” - Monica Tavares Rocha, Coordinator of the IPAEP Program
  • "This collaboration will be beneficial to the international fight against domestic violence. I will be able to learn the unique challenges survivors of domestic violence face in Cape Verde and Isalda will be able to learn how we provide support to our survivors here in Brockton. This knowledge exchange will foster mutual growth and strengthen the global response to domestic violence." - Nadia Goncalves, Domestic Violence Coordinator

The Roaring 20’s was a time of great parties, innovative music, and social change. Among those changes: domestic violence became illegal in more and more states. Today, in the Second Roaring 20’s, we are still enjoying parties and music and continue to push for change to prevent violence against those most vulnerable in our community.

Family and Community Resources, Inc. (FCR) invites you to “Cruise” Through the Roaring 20’s (2.0) with us at our Spring Gala. The Gala is on Saturday May 10th, from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, at The Canoe Club in West Bridgewater!

In 2024, FCR’s dedicated team of advocates and clinicians helped over 3,400 individuals access life-saving resources, find safe housing, and exercise their rights to realize a happy and healthy future for themselves and their children. FCR has spent the last 56 years helping survivors stay afloat, and while our team has grown and changed over the years, we continue to ensure that those we aid receive the highest standard of care, regardless of their backgrounds and beliefs.
