Dear Laker Community,

As we near the end of the school year, I want to wish everyone congratulations on a successful year! It seems like only yesterday we were welcoming students back to campus, and now here we are, preparing to celebrate the end of an incredible school year next week. The year truly flew by, filled with countless memories and remarkable accomplishments.

Our global community has thrived, and I am especially proud of our 125 residential boarding students who bring such a rich diversity to our school. These students come to us from all over the world and have achieved incredible successes that deserve recognition.

Our residential student-athletes have shone brightly this year. Students in our boarding program set multiple school records in basketball, while playing integral roles on our state championship finalist team. They won district championships in swimming and tennis, and qualified for the state championships in girls weightlifting. These talented students have added to our proud athletic tradition.

Beyond the athletic fields, our boarding students have excelled in the arts and academics. Our thespians and artists have won numerous awards, showcasing their extraordinary talents. Our Model UN team demonstrated outstanding diplomacy and leadership. We were also thrilled that our Homecoming Queen was a boarding student who embodies the spirit and values of our community.

Academically, our boarding students have achieved remarkable success. Many have been admitted to prestigious colleges and universities, a testament to their hard work and dedication. They have been inducted into countless honor societies, reflecting their commitment to excellence in education.

The experiences outside the classroom have been equally enriching. Our students have embarked on trips to Tanzania, Prague, Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C., broadening their horizons and expanding the reach of our global community. These journeys have not only been educational but have also strengthened the bonds within our community.

As I look back on this year, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible achievements of our diverse student body. I wish all members of our community a successful end to this school year and a safe and relaxing summer.

Warm regards,

Alex Birchenall

Congratulations to Zhuoyang (Tony) Lin, one of our sophomore Lakers, who has earned a top score in the 2024 PhysicsBowl competition! Tony earned 1st Place in Division 1 in the Southeast United States and placed 19th globally.

The PhysicsBowl is an annual global high school competition put on by the American Association of Physics Teachers. The competition consists of a 45-minute, 40-question multiple choice test. Students compete in one of two divisions: one for first-year physics students, and one for students that have already completed their first year of physics.

Tony is a sophomore in Honors Physics, so he competed in Division 1. Mr. David McCallister, our high school physics teacher who supported our students in participating in the PhysicsBowl, shared that "Tony's natural ability and tireless preparation has led to this outstanding achievement. His relentless work ethic sets him apart."

Tony's score spearheaded our top five school-wide scorers in Division 1, which also included:

  • Xingyue Chen
  • Haoyu Liu
  • Aly Elsonbaty
  • Thomas Petrongari Rosner

Additionally, WPS’s highest-scoring division 2 students were:

  • Arjun Somnali
  • Andrew Ribarich
  • Gino Soriano
  • Phillip Zhu
  • Fabricio Toledo

We are incredibly proud of our high-achieving Lakers for their hard work and dedication!
