National Mental Health Awareness and

National Foster Care Month

May is an important month in our field because it marks National Foster Care Month. This month acknowledges the 368,000+ American youth in foster care and the foster parents, child welfare professionals, and policymakers who help them find safe and loving homes.

May is also National Mental Health Awareness Month, which increases awareness of the mental health challenges that plague so many Americans and the importance of mental health and wellness in our lives.

This month, we are celebrating in our communities by honoring our foster parents, raising awareness, fundraising for our programs, thanking our staff, and engaging with people like YOU who support us in serving these causes.

Important Facts

  • There are over 368,000 youth in foster care in the United States

Remembering Fred Richardson

On April 30th, staff across the country participated in our agency-wide Remember Fred Day. Remember Fred Day is a staff appreciation day honoring the memory of Fredrick Richardson. Fred was a long-standing Board Member and Chair for Cayuga Centers and lived by the Booker T. Washington quote, "If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else."

Please read our "Remember Fredrick N. "Chuckles" Richardson: Reflecting on the Man Behind Remember Fred Day" booklet to learn more about the incredible life and legacy of Fred Richardson.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)

Classroom Art Project

Several students in our classrooms, ages 10 to 17, collaborated to create this painting for SAAM. Themes of Resilience, Strength, and Creativity invoke how connected we are by our lived experiences, how we can overcome barriers, and how we can have empathy towards others. This artwork showcasing unity and solidarity was made to bring awareness to sexual assault issues that continue to prevail in our society today.

Denim Day

On April 24th, Denim Day, Cayuga Centers employees were encouraged to wear denim and teal in support of sexual violence prevention and education. Staff from all regions stood together to say we stand in solidarity and support for survivors.
