John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

Jesus said to his disciples, ”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every people under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Fellow Jews and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

in those days I will pour out my Spirit,

       and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show portents in the heaven above

and signs on the earth below,

blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

20 The sun shall be turned to darkness

   and the moon to blood,

before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

  • “They are filled with new wine.” Do we ever think something isn’t true or pass judgment because we don’t understand it?
  • How easy is it to believe all that Jesus has done, particularly when it doesn’t seem to be easily explained?
  • How much emphasis do we place on the Holy Spirit? Do we give equal weight to the Spirit as we do God and Jesus? Why or why not?
  • What is our understanding of the 3 distinct parts of the trinity and the role they play in our lives individually and as the entire deity?

Blessings, Pastor Ann.

Housing Needed

Intern Housing Needed for Summer

Barb Condon and John Stevens' former

parishioner’s grandson needs housing this summer. See the information in the note below. Housing is always very tight for summer interns in Idaho Falls.

Jayson is working on his master's in electrical engineering from the U of I. He is coming to Idaho Falls on the first of June to start an internship for his master's. He is looking for a place to live, so I'm reaching out to people I know to see if you all could help with housing; Either renting him space or if you know of someone who takes in interns. I would expect him to pay something and help out.

Contact Barb Condon or Cherie if you can help out or know of something that could help.

What "month" is it?

I've been trying to call our attention to various ways we can be aware of those around us, such as Black History Month, Volunteer Month, and Women's History Month. There are several things we can call our attention to this month: Asian American & Pacific Islanders, Haitian Heritage, Jewish American Heritage, Mental Health Awareness, and National Military Appreciation.

Summer Food Service Program does not have a sponsor and summer lunch funding was turned down by the Idaho Legislature. Community Food Basket will try to take up some of the slack with food bags of individual kid-friendly foods given to families during the summer. CFB is asking for donations specifically for that program and for volunteers to help fill the bags and distribute them. *Added note: the New Day Church Council voted to send a $2000 cash donation from the former Summer Food Service Program funds to the IFCFB to assist with purchasing food items for this program.

You can bring egg cartons to church and we will make sure they get them.

2024 ELCA Youth Gathering

Robert and Anora are excited to have the opportunity to attend

the 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering held in New Orleans this coming summer!

They needed to raise $4500 total for the trip.

Before the Raffle Basket Fundraiser,

they had raised from Noisy Offerings and Mardi Gras a total of $2679.36!

The Raffles and meal donations brought in $2396.60 and of that,

we shared $500 with Savannah to help her reach her goal too!!

That means we added $1896.60 to our balance

which gives us $4575.96!!!!

Good job good and faithful servants!!!!

What do we do with the excess raised money and the next 2 noisy offerings?

We plan to use the additional money to do fun activities with all the kids in the congregation. Maybe a movie night? We shall see!!

Noisy Offering

We will have a noisy offering the first Sunday of the month through July to assist the youth in doing a fun activity. Bring your loose pocket change, or the entire change jar!
