Eastbound and Westbound I-10 Closures

Construction Activity

  • Nightly single lane closures along eastbound I-10 are scheduled next Monday, February 12 - Wednesday, February 14, 7 p.m. - 5 a.m. Alternating westbound lane closures are also scheduled Thursday, February 15, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Crews are continuing excavation and asphalt work in preparation for future concrete paving along eastbound I-10.


  • The eastbound I-10 Cactus City Rest Area remains fully closed while crews remove and rebuild the roadway through the rest area. Additional drainage and utility work is also occurring throughout the area. Please remember to reduce your traveling speed, follow all temporary traffic signs, and map out your route ahead of travel using Caltrans' QuickMap.

Winter Driving Conditions


Driving in rainy weather requires extra caution and attention to ensure safety on the road. First and foremost, reduce your speed and maintain a safe following distance to allow for increased braking time in wet conditions. Use vehicle headlights to enhance visibility, and use your windshield wipers to keep the windshield clear. Avoid sudden movements or sharp turns, as roads can become slippery, and hydroplaning is a risk. Always stay focused and avoid distractions while driving in rainy weather. Safe driving practices in the rain contribute to a safer experience for you, others on the road, and crews working in the field.

Project Background

The I-10 Desert Rehab Project segment is a 13-mile stretch of the I-10 freeway near Coachella in Riverside County, between 1.8 miles east of the Dillon Road Interchange and 2 miles east of the Cactus City Rest Area. Construction will take place over the next 3.5 years and includes repaving I-10, updating lane striping, and the addition of an eastbound truck climbing lane. The Cactus City Rest Area will also be closed for 1-2 months during construction. 


In addition to repairing and restoring existing roadway pavement and adding an eastbound truck climbing lane, the I-10 Desert Rehab Project will install electric vehicle charging stations at the Cactus City Rest Area, replace and upgrade bridge railings, guardrail systems, and roadway signage, and improve roadway infrastructure including drainage and stormwater treatment systems.
