CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Week of March 3, 2025

MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE DECK POUR PROGRESS

Crews poured the first sections of the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge deck, which is the roadway that vehicles will utilize to cross the bridge.

On one span of the bridge, 180 cubic yards of concrete was used, which is enough to fill approximately 55 backyard swimming pools.

Deck pours will continue through Spring 2025, paving the way for bridge completion in August 2025.

CLOSURE AT KINGMAN STREET AND

MT. VERNON AVENUE

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Crews plan to perform waterline work at the Kingman Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue intersection. This work requires a temporary closure of the intersection.

WHERE: Intersection of Kingman Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue. Motorists on Kingman Street will be detoured to use Cabrera Avenue.

WHEN: Thursday, March 6, for approximately two weeks. This closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with construction hours from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

WHAT TO EXPECT: To install the new water line, crews plan to sawcut into the street and excavate the area to make the necessary improvements. Barriers will be installed to secure the work area, and heavy construction equipment like excavators, compaction rollers, and loaders will be on site to complete the work. Large construction vehicles and delivery trucks may be in the area during work hours and will primarily use 5th Street from the freeway to reach the jobsite.

You may hear noise or feel vibration related to construction activity. All construction is dynamic, and the schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change. Visit the project Google map for the most up-to-date closures scheduled and available detour routes.

ABOUT THE MT. VERNON AVENUE BRIDGE PROJECT

Since opening to the public in 1934, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge (MVAB) was an iconic structure, bridging San Bernardino communities to the north and south and serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students and businesses. The Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge is a complex bridge replacement project that spans over one of the largest rail yards in the region. An iconic structure in San Bernardino, the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge connected communities on the west side of San Bernardino for nearly 90 years, serving as a vital link for residents, visitors, students, and businesses.

To ensure the safety and longevity of the bridge, the City of San Bernardino (City) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partnered with the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) to rebuild the bridge. Improvements at the south end of the bridge will include retaining walls along both sides with 3rd Street closed during construction but opened to traffic permanently after construction is complete. On the north side retaining walls will also be constructed along both sides of the transition between the bridge and W. Kingman Street. Where Mount Vernon Avenue reconnects to W. 2nd Street and W. Kingman Street new curbs and gutters will be installed. Reconstruction of the new bridge began in 2023 and the new structure is anticipated to open in 2025.
