Dear Colleagues,
May brings with it a multitude of celebrations that honor and recognize important members of our school communities, and a list of observances this month that remind us of the diversity in our society and the importance of supporting one another.
Our schools are the heart of our communities and observances like the California Day of the Teacher, National Teacher Appreciation Day and Week, Classified School Employee Week, National School Nurse Day, School Principal’s Day and School Lunch Hero Day, serves as a reminder of what it takes to provide students with a supportive, safe and nurturing school environment.
This month, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. It is an opportunity for us to embrace the diversity that enriches our society and bring greater understanding and appreciation of each other. Through understanding and solidarity, we can build a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all.
May is also National Foster Care Awareness month, a time to bring attention to the experiences of children and youth in foster care and the unique challenges they face daily. Our agency works collaboratively with our school districts, child welfare agencies and community organizations to improve the educational gap for foster youth, and I am proud that we can shed some light on the work that is being done in this county.
Lastly, this month is Mental Health Awareness Month. Our mental health is vital to our well-being and it is often overlooked or stigmatized. Let us continue to work to have important conversations around mental health and provide support and resources to those in need.
In closing, please take a look at the workshops and professional development opportunities in a variety of topics listed below. I hope you will share this with your colleagues and encourage them to sign up for monthly updates, as well.
Thank you for your tireless work and dedication throughout the year.
In partnership,
Lynn Mackey
Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools
