Letter from Claudia: Shower Of Blessings

Nine years ago, a handful of parishioners decided it was high time for St. Paul’s to reach out to the growing homeless population of men and women living in Balboa Park. The diocese had a mobile Shower Unit and we had two parking lots, a water supply, a sewer access and electricity near one of them. The First United Methodist church in Mission Valley asked if they could serve breakfast for us. Inspired by what was happening, more parishioners volunteered, donated clothes and towels, and gave us money to buy hygiene and other supplies. ... Parade for St Georges Day St Paul Cathedral San Diego

St. George's Evensong

Sunday, May 5, 5 pm, The Cathedral or Worship Online

Our annual St. George’s Evensong is equally a celebration of St. George, the patron saint of England and our Anglican and British heritage. Preceding the 5 pm service, we will gather in the Dean’s Courtyard at 4:30 pm to process around the block accompanied by the Cameron Highlanders Pipe Band, Scottish dancers and the slain dragon (made entirely out of bread). The service includes glorious music in the grandest style of Anglican worship sung by the Cathedral Choir accompanied by organ, brass, and timpani. Also, note that our Choristers are back for the first time since the pandemic! The Rev. Canon Richard Hogue will offer a homily. Reception to follow in the Great Hall.

Announcements

Caring for Judy MacDonald

As you may know, our beloved registrar and receptionist Judy MacDonald suffered an accident this week and has been hospitalized. She will be away from church for several weeks. Judy lives alone and doesn’t have family close by: St. Paul’s is her family here. We have set up a CaringBridge site for those who would like to stay informed about Judy’s recovery and send her good wishes. You can sign up here.

The Music Center Campaign

“Strengthening community, connecting neighbors, and broadening outreach through music.”

The $2.5M Music Center Campaign will create a single space that centralizes all components of our music program—currently dispersed across four different levels throughout campus and without a dedicated rehearsal space—and broaden our community outreach abilities, just as the Guild Room and other spaces on campus do now, but with a special emphasis on the music and arts component of our mission and ministry. Your gift makes a difference, and every gift brings us closer to breaking ground on the Cathedral Music Center Project. Fortunately, we at St. Paul’s are not the only ones who see the civic value of this project, the Parker Foundation is challenging new donors to match their $25,000 gift to the campaign! Please indicate your desire to have your gift matched by Parker by marking “Parker Match” in the memo line of your check or on the Music Center donation page.

Sharing is Caring

St. Paul’s Simpler Living Creation Care Ministry:

Simpler Living is grateful for having had the opportunity to partner with our sister Cathedral ministries - Administration, Adult Formation, and Family Ministry - during Earth Month. We grow so much when we share our interests and work together.

We have learned and benefited from the good words and works of our Creation Care and community partners. We are thankful for the talents of Chef Katie Farina of Katie’s Healing Kitchen, Lynn Marian of Plant with Purpose, artist and activist Jan Phillips, and finally, William Morris, our Creation Care brother from GreenFaith

William shared two important resources to elevate GreenFaith’s work for climate equity and education for tomorrow’s leaders:

Support Grassroot Leaders in Tanzania - GreenFaith is asking us to sign on to a statement in support of climate activists who are being intimidated in their own communities. Sign on.

Young people ages 18 - 35 are invited to learn about and apply for fellowships to become leaders in a year-long faith-based climate action program Greenfaith Young Adult Fellowship.

It takes more than a village to respond to the climate crisis. So thanks to you for increasing your commitment to God’s good creation through individual actions and community advocacy!

Did you know... St. Paul's has a directory?

It’s called Realm and you can have the whole parish at your fingertips on your phone or home computer. If you are an active member or contributor to St. Paul’s, you have an entry in our directory, but unless you have activated it and made it public, other parishioners cannot see your information. You can see from the picture that Dean Penny’s information is viewable by everyone in the church. You get to choose how public you want to be; regardless of your choice, only other parishioners on Realm can access your entry. And you can change your information at any time. If you’d like help with making your directory entry more available to fellow parishioners, contact Rev. Richard Hogue (hoguer@stpaulcathedral.org) for some assistance.
