A Shift for HB230

VBCF's priority legislation in the 2024 General Assembly, HB230 - a bill that would eliminate patient out-of-pocket costs for follow-up breast imaging like diagnostic mammography, ultrasound, and MRIs - has shifted course. We previously reported that the bill would likely move to the Health Insurance Reform Commission (HIRC) for review, but we spoke too soon!

Late last week, HB230 was sent to the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Compensation and Retirement. The subcommittee will now consider the cost impact of the bill on the state. A favorable review by the subcommittee could mean the bill gets reported to the State Senate - the next step on the way to passage.

ACTION NEEDED: Outreach to Subcommittee Members

We expect that HB230 will be heard on Monday, February 5, at the next Appropriations Subcommittee on Compensation and Retirement meeting. If your Delegate is on this Subcommittee (list below), please contact them and urge them to support this bill!

Sample message to cut and paste and/or edit:

"I am calling/writing as a constituent of Delegate [insert name] from [insert city/town] to ask them to support HB230. This bill would protect patients from expensive out-of-pocket costs for follow-up diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, or MRIs. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer are essential to better health outcomes and saving lives. But, breast cancer cannot be diagnosed with one mammogram. Additional imaging can cost patients hundreds to thousands of dollars. HB203 will help Virginians get the breast care they need without financial barriers."
