Beating the Heat: It's our responsibility

As we have felt firsthand, last week brought record-setting heat waves to the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions, even more than "Swedish Days is always hot" kind of heat. Those relentlessly high temperatures have been more than just a topic for conversation-they pose serious risks to our health and well-being.

"Understanding the Assignment" – Mark 7:31-37

This story of the healing of a deaf person demonstrates Jesus’ need for a PR firm. He’s terrible at marketing! He’s been going around instructing people to not tell the stories about him and yet, they do it anyway! Thank God they did, otherwise we wouldn’t have these stories today. Join us for another story of Jesus that might make us terrible secret keepers too.

This week's Bulletin can be found in the Document Center.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR ASP MISSION TRIP!

Learn more about this year's trip at our special ASP Worship Service on July 21

We took 29 volunteers to Charleston, WV this year. We had a new adventure working in a more urban area where there is still a great need for housing rehabs. We worked on 4 houses in total. We installed a handicap accessible bathtub and new toilet and flooring, put up new drywall in several rooms that had water damage, and one crew had an abandoned house that they took out all the flooring, walls and ceilings. One house we worked on will be given to a family whose home is too far gone to be repaired.

We ate a lot of ice cream, laughted a lot, sweat, shed tears, and experienced God moments. This was a special trip! ~ Julie & Mike Popplewell

SWEDISH DAYS SUCCESS!

Many thanks to all of you who volunteered or bought food at the Men’s Club Swedish Days booth last week. Because of you, we had our second most successful fund raising event ever, exceeded only by last year which had perfect weather. We filled 122 volunteer slots, served over 2,206 people, and had gross sales of over $21,387, and increased our visibility in the community. The Men’s club will be meeting this fall to identify the charities that we will support with the income from Swedish days and our other fund raisers.

We have limited quantities of sausage, soda, water, hot dogs, cookies, cakes, buns, chips, Dilly Bars, dill sauce, ketchup, cucumbers, and ice left over that we will be selling at cost. Please see Jim McConnell after church to purchase and pick up anything you might want.

Again, thank all of you who helped make this a successful Swedish Days! ~ Lorne Tweed, Steve Lillie, Jim McConnell & Bob Weick

Check out our Facebook page for more photos from Swedish Days.

Do you know someone who would like to work with our youngest children in the nursery on Sunday mornings?

We have a paid position of Nursery Assistant available to manage the nursery care during worship. We anticipate the time commitment to be about 2.5 hrs. every Sunday, and the pay will be minimum wage.

For more information, please contact Pastor Rob Hamilton.

A/V HELP NEEDED!

We are currently looking to hire someone to assist with our livestream a couple of times each month. For a complete job description click here. Please share this with anyone with tech skills that could spare 10-15 hours to help each month.

We are also having difficulty finding volunteers. The job we need help with isn't too complicated. It is just for the Sunday morning service. This person turns on and off microphones (if needed), adjusts microphone volume, and clicks on the slides to advance them during the worship service.

We will set up training so volunteers comfortable working in the booth. Even if you can only help 4-6 times a year, that would be a great help.

Contact Carolyn Burnham for more information.

A Note from our Trustees

Some may have noticed or read about one our neighbors being dissatisfied with a recent tree trimming to remove branches from our sanctuary roof. Please know that we have reached out in good faith: communicating prior to the trimming, offering to trim the trees on their side at our expense and even previously replacing arborvitae. We will continue to do our best to be good neighbors while also caring for our building and grounds.

A Note from Dr. Greg

Dear UMCG,

I just want to sincerely thank you all for your warm welcome into the community of Geneva, and for your embrace of me and my daughters at this wonderful church. I will always hold a special place in my heart for the good people of this Tri-City area. Keep seeking first the kingdom.

Grace and Peace,

Greg Coates

CELEBRATING 185 YEARS

Do you have photos from past ASP trips?

In anticipation of celebrating our 185th Anniversary this September, we are trying to collect as many visual memories (photos or movies) that we can to help us create some historical exhibits.

We have very few pictures from past ASP Trips.

Please look through your old photos and if you find some pictures, bring them in to church and we will scan them and give them back to you!

TAKE PART IN OUR ORAL HISTORY

To you have some information to share about a part of our church history? Do you have a story to share?

Were you a part of a Rummage Sale, Pancake Breakfast, Swedish Buffet, Swedish Days Food Booth, Committee, Couples Club, Talent Show, Road Runners, Leisure League, Sunday School, VBS, Third Tuesday Supper, Mission Trip or Outing, ASP, Youth Group, Small Group or Bible Study, Church Building Project, Gardening Group, Choir or Music Group or another activity we didn't include on this list? We would love to record you talking about your experience both recent and and in the past to create an oral history of the church to present during our Anniversary Celebration and for the future.

We are making history now. We are looking for all ages and for people who have been here for a while as well as people new to our congregation.

We will be conduction interviews mostly in July and August. Please contact Carolyn Burnham, Chuck Howlett or Christine Donovan if you would like to participate.

CREATION CARE

LEARN WHY DARK SKIES IS IMPORTANT

This past March, several Creation Care members participated in the environmental webinar given by the University of Illinois on “Project Dark Skies: How to Limit Light Pollution.” We learned that artificial lights affect insects, plants, wildlife, nocturnal animals and even humans at night. Click here to view the webinar and learn how individuals can practice practical outdoor lighting habits and help to keep our skies dark.

We are also excited that the new landscaping here at UMC Geneva will be implementing a Dark Sky lighting plan!
