In my sermon on Sunday, April 13th, the day after we returned home from our trip to Central Europe, I spoke of St. John of Nepomuk, the 14th century Czech priest in Prague. According to tradition, he was the personal confessor of the Bohemian queen, and when challenged by the king, refused to divulge the secrets of the confessional. For this resistance to his order, King Wenceslaus IV, had Nepomuk imprisoned, tortured and thrown in the Vltava River to die. His death eventually resulted in the fleeing from the city of both the Archbishop and the king. Three centuries later, he was beatified and canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Today Nepomuk is easily recognizable throughout Central Europe as the sentinel of bridges, holding a cross in his arms, often with a halo of five stars around his head, as the saint who protects travelers and against floods. Since, everyone who enters the old city of Bratislava has to cross a bridge, I looked up at St. John of Nepomuk regularly.
But as I mentioned in my sermon, Nepomuk is worth lifting up for more than simply protecting bridges from floods. That is why he is still remembered today, centuries after his death. His life is a message for the ages of being faithful in times of crisis. For the peasant masses and townspeople of his time, Nepomuk was a symbol of unwavering faith in the face of trial and persecution, serving as an inspiring model of Christian faith to embrace and follow. For clergy, Nepomuk represented an honorable and devout priest who carried out his duty, making the ultimate sacrifice. For the academics and scholars, Nepomuk’s death was a cautionary tale about the inevitable conflict that can arise between Church and State when evil acts are committed by either side, in the name of faith or government. In the face of such trials, faithful men and women were called to be witnesses to God’s truth.
The lessons of John of Nepomuk’s life are just as real and relevant today. It is hard to make decisions in times of crisis. Certainly, Jesus’ invitation to his followers, begins by saying, Yes, to Christ and his promise of the resurrection. But in times of crisis, we are also reminded that the invitation may mean saying, “No,” with your life, freedom and possessions- especially in the face of the church and the rulers. The tragic story of Nepomuk’s life and death teaches us that instead of abundant life and joy, we may be called to endure suffering and loss.
Surprisingly, that is the very warning Jesus gave to his disciples nearly 2000 years ago on Maundy Thursday just as he prepared to leave them. They are the words that we will hear read in scripture over these next Sundays in worship- but we read them in the knowledge of Jesus’ resurrection.
There is more as well. We hear these words with the promise of Pentecost, of the giving of the Holy Spirit. Yes, God’s spirit of comfort and strength, is coming to accompany us.
Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

LOTI Pollinator Gardens
New Landscaping on the 21st Street Lawn
| |
Have you wondered what that layer of mulch is on the south side of the church? Perhaps you noticed small plantings as well. We are proud to have added a pollinator garden to the church grounds. A pollinator garden is designed with the intent of growing specific nectar and pollen-producing plants, in a way that attracts insects known as pollinators.
Our new Pollinator Gardens were supported by a grant organized in part by Angela Erdrich and Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl. 367 plants were put into the ground on April 23rd by Pastor Arden, Brad Anderson, Mark Duff, and Dale Thomas. Dara and Angela came to help, as well. Many thanks for all their work!

This program explores works by some of the world’s most famous composers, including Haydn, Puccini, Strauss, and Chopin. The twist is that none of the pieces included on the program (except one) are typical of any other work that particular composer ever created. Three of these great masters wrote many other monumental works outside of the chamber music realm, and one of them invented the most iconic of all chamber music forms. Join us as we explore what happens when creative geniuses go on an unexpected journey and compose outside of the box!

Ascension Sunday
Sunday, May 5th
9:30 AM
Sanctuary
| |
According to the Book of the Acts of Apostles, Jesus walked upon the earth another 40 days after his resurrection from the dead, and before he ascended into heaven. For that reason, Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday, which means few churches can celebrate the day in worship. This year, Ascension Day is Thursday, May 9th.. Many churches today, however, either mark the Sunday service either before or after the day as Ascension Sunday. At Lake of the Isles, we will celebrate Ascension Sunday on May 5th.
One of the most striking symbols of the Ascension Day reading is the extinguishing of the Paschal Candle which has been positioned near the altar throughout the season of Easter. The candle is the symbol of Jesus’ resurrection light and his ongoing presence in the world for 40 days. As Jesus “ascends” and is “seen no more” the flame of the candle is snuffed out. The Paschal Candle is only lit again for baptisms and funerals.

The Norwegian Constitution Day of May 17th is not a church holiday, but it is always a grand occasion for celebrating Norwegian music. This year’s service will include selections performed by the Lake String Quartet of Edvard Grieg. The church choir and guests will perform an anthem for string quartet, piano and chorus by the relatively young Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, called The Ground. It is a wonderful and moving piece using all our resources, calling our grounding to be in “the world” that God has made and where he has chosen to show his favor. The service will conclude with a unique piece called Song of the Earth by Frode Fjellheim that was used in Walt Disney’s movie Frozen.

Wear Red
According to the Book of the Apostles, on the 50th day of Easter known in the ancient Greek world as Pentecost, God sent his Holy Spirit upon the disciples. They had gathered in prayer and thanksgiving wondering when God would send them a clear vision for the church. On that Pentecost God sent the spirit upon the disciples, and the spirit appeared upon their heads like tongues of fire. This is the day we celebrate as the birth of the Christian Church and its mission to proclaim the good news to the whole world.
This day will end our Sunday School Program Year and we will also receive new members on this day. Please contact Diane LaMere to register to be received as a LOTI member on Pentecost Sunday.
