I have always felt that May is one of the busiest months of the year, second only to December. There are so many obligations and events; birthdays, graduations, Mother’s Day and garden planting. But the weather is so beautiful I think we all want to be outside as much as possible. Here at the library we are getting ready for our Summer Reading Programs which will begin in June. We are also trying some new things out and want to help you try new things as well.
For years the FOSL book sale was Mother’s day weekend. Talk about a busy time. This year we are running the book sale this first week of May and for an entire week. Help us make this new version of the book sale a success. Stop in and pick up some new to you books, or books to gift. The FOSL book sale ends Saturday May 4. Another new item at the library is Kanopy, which is video streaming service. Think of it as your free Netflix account. See more below.
Looking for a new book series to read, or a new author? Be sure to ask for recommendations from one of our amazing staff. We all have different interests and love to share our favorites.
Another new thing we have tried recently is hosting our annual Volunteer appreciation brunch here at the library. I thought to myself everyone worked so hard to get this beautiful building built we should use it for special events like this. It was a wonderful brunch and we loved getting to say thank you to our volunteers who could make it.
Try something new this month at the library, we will see you there.
Warm regards,

Eyes on the Skies: A Solar Eclipse Viewing Event at the Library
The Shepherdstown Library's solar eclipse viewing event on Monday, April 8th, was a smashing success, drawing a crowd of 175 eager spectators. It was a special occasion that brought together people of all ages, creating a vibrant sense of community as they gathered to witness this rare celestial event.
The library provided solar viewing glasses, and many attendees brought their own or even extra pairs to share. The Youth Department organized engaging eclipse-themed activities, including crafting pinhole cameras, which added to the excitement for our younger guests. For those interested in a more in-depth view, the library also offered live coverage from NASA in the conference room. The energy was electric as everyone came together to experience this remarkable event, making it a truly memorable day at the library.

SPL Celebrates Volunteers with a Spring Brunch
On Sunday, April 21, the library hosted a delightful spring brunch to express gratitude for the tireless dedication and unwavering support of the library's volunteers, whose efforts have greatly benefited the library and our entire community. With 35 people in attendance, the event was filled with lively conversation and camaraderie.
Library Director Christy Hagerty added a fun twist to the occasion by leading a round of Library Trivia, challenging the guests' knowledge of SPL facts and details. To keep the energy high, a scavenger hunt took the attendees on a playful adventure throughout the library, uncovering hidden gems and learning more about the institution they support. The brunch was a wonderful way to celebrate the volunteers who help us keep the library organized and thriving. See all the photos from the event here!

The volunteers included board members, FOSL members, program leaders, in-house volunteers and, of course, our volunteer coordinator.
