Bridge Construction Updates

MacArthur Boulevard Bridge

While work on the bridge at MacArthur Boulevard bridge is nearly complete, activity is still ongoing in the area as other improvements continue on the MacArthur Boulevard ramps and on the street below the bridge.

Contractors are currently performing roadway excavation along the northbound MacArthur Boulevard

off-ramp and will begin rebuilding the curbs soon after that. Currently, one left turn lane at the northbound

off-ramp is closed but the two left turn lanes will be restored this summer.

Edinger Avenue Bridge

Contractors continue to backfill at the Edinger Avenue bridge, as well as pour concrete at the abutments. An abutment is a component of a bridge that offers vertical support to the superstructure at its ends.

Railroad Bridge

Crews are currently drilling piles for the foundation at the railroad bridge under SR-55 and will continue installing piles through the end of May. The work at this location is being closely coordinated with Metrolink to ensure the safety of passengers and crews working near the railroad.

Lane Channel Update

Crews are focusing their efforts on reconstructing the southern end of the Lane Channel, just north of MacArthur Boulevard. Contractors are preparing to demolish the channel, and install shoring plates.

Construction generally occurs on weekdays, Monday through Friday, between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Businesses adjacent to this work may be impacted by noise and vibration.

Memorial Day

In observance of Memorial Day, there will be no closures scheduled Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27. Construction activities will resume Tuesday, May 28.

About the Project

OCTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, is improving 4 miles of SR-55 between I-405 and I-5. The project will improve traffic flow and reduce travel time by adding one regular lane and one carpool lane in each direction. Also, the project will add merge lanes between several interchanges and stripe carpool lanes for continuous access, augmenting safety on the freeway by making merging easier. These enhancements are expected to create a better, smoother driving experience for motorists.
