UMB Announces First On-Campus Solar Project
UMB has signed a Power Purchase Agreement with CI Renewables LLC for the design, construction, and operation of solar photovoltaic systems on the top level of the Penn Street Garage and Pearl Garage. The new solar energy facilities will have a combined capacity of 1,386 kilowatts and are projected to produce approximately 1,504,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, the equivalent of electricity use in 207 homes for one year.

Bike to Work Week
May 13th to May 19th, 2024
Bike to Work Week is an annual event celebrated across the United States each May to encourage and celebrate bicycling to work (or anywhere!) and to promote public awareness of bicycling as a healthy alternative to driving, bicycle infrastructure, and bike safety.
Our office will be tabling at the Campus Center on May 14th and May 15th from 8:00am - 9:30am for Bike to Work Week!

UMB Campus Tree Inventory
Check out our new campus tree inventory that shows the locations of nearly 1,000 trees on campus. Trees are categorized by their general type (i.e. maple, oak, cherry, etc.). You can see how many native, non-native, and invasive species we have across campus.

Compost in Your Workplace
Are you interested in composting in your workplace?
Here are our recommended 4 steps:
- Rotate responsibilities with coworkers volunteering on a weekly basis
- Put the compost bin in a shared space (ex. the kitchen freezer)
- Know the UMB compost guidelines and only put accepted materials in the bin
- Deposit the food waste in one of our 24/7 drop off locations when full

The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) opens its doors for a free Open House on Saturday, May 4, 1-4 pm. Enjoy hands-on science activities for kids of all ages, meet our scientists, and discover important marine research happening throughout the harbor and the Chesapeake Bay!

Join us at the Walters for free art-making activities! Change can be difficult for many reasons, but growth cannot happen without it. People throughout history have used banners to share messages advocating or announcing important changes. At Drop-in Art Making, you can create your own banner to honor a change that helped you grow. All ages are welcome.

Saturday, May 11 is our free, family friendly, public festival (8am-2pm). Parking on-site is $10. We have plant vendors, gift vendors, nonprofit/family activity vendors and food vendors. Market Day is an opportunity for those interested in expanding their knowledge of plants, flowers, trees, herbs, and other flora that grow in Maryland’s soils to make purchases and talk to horticultural experts.

Sustainability Term of the Month
Air Quality Index (AQI): Index for daily reporting of air pollution levels based upon five criteria pollutants. AQI values 101 to 500 are associated with greater air pollution and related health concerns.
You can go to AirNow.gov to learn more about air quality, pollutants, and check the air quality in your current area. If you are curious about the air quality on campus you can go to our weather station's dashboard.
