Composition Lesson - Three Big Ones

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

Up Down… Left Right… Diagonal… this is your eye movement. The painter guiding you through a path of visual excitement and visual rest. In this BobBlast we explore three separate graphic design compositions, universally recognized as a strong composition.

Let’s look at the definitions of each:

Vertical composition emphasizes height and vertical lines and shapes.

This composition suggests a sense of upward motion and rhythm.

Horizontal composition lets the viewer’s eye move across the painting. This composition is ideal for landscapes and reclining figures.

Diagonal composition emphasizes motion, gives the painting a sense of depth and suggests perspective.

In the demo, I paint the structure of each of these compositions–you can see how I start. After I select the composition and paint the basic foundation on the surface, I then decide where the focal point is going to be… usually at one point in the golden section.
