Student Access and Opportunity

At the Stafford Education Foundation (SEF), we love seeing students take charge, explore new opportunities, and develop leadership skills that will serve them for years to come. In the fall of 2024, Mountain View High School opened the doors to its specialty center—the Leadership, Education, and Public Service (LEAPS) Center—and it’s already making an impact!

Under the guidance of Mr. Jason Pope, the LEAPS program is designed for rising freshmen interested in careers in education, public service, and leadership. It houses the Teachers for Tomorrow program, integrates leadership with the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and introduces students to careers in law enforcement and public service.

Jumping Into Leadership—One Egg at a Time!

SEF has had the absolute pleasure of working with a team of LEAPS students to plan the Egg Hunt for the Hippity Hop on April 19. This hands-on experience has given students the chance to:

✅ Create a committee structure

✅ Elect leadership

✅ Brainstorm and set goals

✅ Develop a schedule

✅ Run the egg hunt from start to finish!

And remember—these are 9th graders! Taking on this level of responsibility might have been daunting, but under the patient leadership of Mr. Pope, the students have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and focus.

Mr. Pope sees this as a valuable community service project and a perfect example of how LEAPS provides students with real-world experiences that build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.

A Huge Thank You!

We are incredibly grateful to the LEAPS students and Mr. Pope for their dedication to this project. We can’t wait to see them in action on April 19!

Community Spotlight

At the Stafford Education Foundation (SEF), we believe in the power of community to create lasting change. This month, we are thrilled to highlight the dedication of Suzanne Firrell and the Greater Falls Run Lions Club for their commitment to supporting our students.

Although retired, Suzanne remains actively engaged in local issues that matter. One topic that caught her attention? School lunch debt. She wanted to understand how this debt accumulates and, more importantly, find a way to help families in need. After researching and meeting with key stakeholders, Suzanne connected with SEF—because she wasn’t just looking for answers, she was looking for solutions.

A Community Comes Together

Determined to take action, Suzanne reached out to the Greater Falls Run Lions Club, rallying them to the cause. Together, they planned a fundraiser at Panera Bread on March 15, with proceeds going toward reducing school lunch debt in Stafford County.

We invite you to be part of this effort! Join us on March 15 at Panera Bread to support Suzanne, the Lions Club, and most importantly, the students who will benefit from this initiative.

Beyond Falls Run

Suzanne’s impact doesn’t stop here—she’s already looking to connect with other community groups to expand this effort across the region. Kudos to Suzanne for using her retirement to make a real difference for local students!

Would you like to organize a fundraiser in your community? We’d love to help! Contact us at staffordeducationfoundation@staffordschools.net to learn how you can get involved.

Together, we can ensure every student has the support they need to thrive!

Teachers Leading the Way

Erin Dowd, Director of the Heather Empfield Day School continuously looks for ways to serve her 24 students. To make each day a successful learning day. Each student receives individualized educational services, with a primary focus on emotional regulation.

When the facing the challenge of space for students to regulate their emotions in private, Ms. Dowd got to work. She researched and found a way to support her students and maintain their dignity when in crisis.

Through a private grant administered by Stafford Education Foundation, Ms. Dowd will be receiving a Sensory Nook in the coming weeks. This Nook provides a safe location for students, creates a controllable capsule in which neurodiverse individuals can self-regulate and function to the best of their individual ability.. Additionally, it can be used as a proactive intervention and positive distraction for students requiring controllable stimuli to re-balance sensory overload from the wider environment.

The Heather Empfield Day School student population comprises twenty-one students receiving special education support throughout the day. These students transitioned from a full-time general education setting and require intense instructional modifications and accommodations that are not feasible in a general public school. .

Ms. Dowd and the educators in the Day School embody one of the core pillars of SEF - Assisting students to maximize their full potential. Thank you to all the educators in the Heather Empfield Day School.
