PESA’s sister organization, Future Leaders California, recently hosted its annual Black History Month Brunch in the Antelope Valley, a gathering aimed at providing opportunities for BIPOC youth to connect with influential minority leaders. The event, first introduced in 2023 due to the lack of Black History Month celebrations in Lancaster, has since become a platform for mentorship, networking, and community-building among young students and accomplished professionals sponsored by the City of Lancaster.
Jennifer Sanchez, PESA's Assistant Director of Youth Development and Social Justice, highlighted the event's significance: "Events like this promote unity, prosperity, mentorship, and networking, allowing students to learn from these leaders about their journeys and career paths."
The brunch featured a distinguished panel comprising professionals from various industries, including a physician, a judge, a financial executive, a colonel from Edwards Air Force Base, and a superintendent from the East Side Union High School District. These leaders shared their personal career journeys and provided students with insight into the challenges and triumphs they encountered along the way.
The event’s itinerary was thoughtfully curated to maximize engagement. It began with an opening prayer from Future Leaders California Chairman Bishop Henry Hearns, followed by an introduction from Nigel Holly, another key organizer. Two high school students were given the opportunity to serve as emcees, introducing the panelists and leading the discussion.
Following the panel, students were served brunch while engaging in one-on-one networking with the panelists. This informal interaction allowed students to ask specific questions, seek mentorship, and even explore potential internship opportunities. This year’s event also introduced a new element—a Lyric Lab workshop hosted by Education Life Coach (ELC ) Jayla Sanchez, which encouraged collaboration and creativity among attendees.
Recognizing outstanding contributions, Future Leaders California honored panelists with the Standard Bearer Award, while Black Student Union (BSU) advisors received the Inspirational Leadership Award. Additionally, both students, Amir and Benson nominated by their advisors were presented with the Future Leaders Generation Next Award.
With approximately 45 students in attendance, the response to the event was overwhelmingly positive. Many students expressed enthusiasm for future events and a desire to hear from even more career professionals next year. "Seeing students genuinely interested in the panelists' stories and actively seeking opportunities confirms that we are making a meaningful impact," Sanchez noted.
