A Taste of African Heritage Updates

New Study Documents Healthy Heritage Food Traditions

We're delighted to share a sneak peek of a new research article being published in Advances in Nutrition, which sheds light on the traditional eating patterns of African heritage, Asian heritage, and Latin American heritage. "Too often, dietary advice focuses on what not to eat," says paper co-author Kristie J. Lancaster, PhD, RD, FAHA, Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition & Food Studies at New York University and AHH Advisor for Oldways.

Latin American Heritage Training Session with Dr. Sylvia Klinger in Partnership with OSU-Extension

In April, attendees engaged with Sarah Anderson, Oldways Heritage Diets Curriculum Manager, and Dr. Sylvia Klinger, founder of Hispanic Food Communications and Oldways Latin American Heritage Advisory Board Member. We thank Oregon State University Extension Services for their wonderful contributions for our Latin American Heritage program.

Oldways African Heritage & Health Program: Events and News 

In February, Oldways Outreach Dietitian Adante Hart presented at the Healthy Kitchens, Healthy Lives conference in Napa, CA. Alongside The Sioux Chef Sean Sherman, they showcased dishes inspired by the African Heritage curriculum.

African Heritage Program Showcased at PLA Conference

On April 4th, Sarah Anderson, Heritage Diets Curriculum Manager at Oldways, and Aurora Sanchez, Healthy Communities Coordinator at the Free Library of Philadelphia, presented at the Public Library Association (PLA). They discussed addressing health disparities through cultural food programs in libraries, sharing practical insights and tips for implementation.
