LaGuardia Celebrates Women’s History Month With ‘HERStory in the Making’

Mark your calendars for “HERStory in the Making,” a series of events for Women’s History Month highlighting the contributions and achievements of women and advocates for women’s rights. This year’s programming focuses on doers and changemakers at the forefront of political, artistic, and educational advancement. Events kick off on Thursday, March 13, with a keynote address from Vilda Vera Mayuga, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP). The HERStory in the Making series is spearheaded by the 2025 Women's History Month Committee, a collaborative, cross-divisional committee of faculty, staff, and students (see list here). “HERStory in the Making honors the advocacy, education, and legal efforts advancing women’s rights and gender equality nationwide. While progress is ongoing, our current political and social climates present new challenges,” said Dr. Alexis McLean, Vice President of Student Affairs. “We encourage the campus to engage in these events, which offer opportunities for self-expression and models for spreading this work far and wide.” Read more here

LaGuardia’s Casa de Las Américas Collaborates with The Climate Museum to Create Pop-Up Exhibition

Climate change is significantly impacting our world by causing rising global temperatures, leading to more extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, floods, and severe storms, among other environmental activities. Casa de las Américas, the Latinx academic and culture center at LaGuardia, recently collaborated with The Climate Museum to present a pop-up version of The End of Fossil Fuel, an exhibition featuring details on how climate change has impacted our world throughout the years. The exhibition will be formally introduced with a program and reception, from 4 to 6 p.m., February 27 in the M-Lobby, where the exhibition is displayed. The pop-up exhibition is an interactive and thought-provoking show designed to spark conversation, action, and hope in the face of the climate crisis. In addition to The Climate Museum, Casa de las Américas collaborated with the NYC Climate Justice Hub, out of the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, and the El Puente: Leaders for Peace and Justice. Dr. Ashley Dawson, author, activist, and professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and the College of Staten Island, is also a featured collaborator who will be showcasing his photos and video from his work on peaking power plants, also known as “peaker” plants.

In Memoriam: LaGuardia Community Remembers Bill Lindner

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we inform you about the sudden passing of Bill Lindner, a cherished friend and devoted colleague, and an irreplaceable presence in the lives of those who knew him. Bill has been a part of LaGuardia Community College for 20 years, serving primarily as the Director of Information Systems before moving over to project management. A man of integrity and generosity, Bill’s professional contributions were matched only by his warmth and ability to bring people together. As a colleague, he was a mentor and a guiding force for the Information Technology Department, always ready with a solution, a word of encouragement, or a well-timed joke to lift spirits. As a friend, he was steadfast and compassionate, someone that could be counted on in any moment, big or small. Bill’s passing has created an irreplaceable void, as he had a profound impact that was felt throughout the College community.
