Celebrate Your Parks with Kindness
Every year, Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to cherish and protect the green spaces around us. It’s a time to reflect on our impact on the environment and to take action towards a more sustainable future for everyone. One crucial aspect of this stewardship is the preservation and appreciation of our parks and natural landscapes. These green spaces not only provide sanctuary for diverse ecosystems but also offer countless benefits to our well-being. While we commemorated Earth Day this month, we shared ideas on how to be kinder to our parks while enjoying them! Read the blog post.

Round Hill Allée Restoration - Share Your Story!
Last month we shared news of the restoration of the iconic allée of maple trees by the Visitors Center in Round Hill Park. We understand that these trees and this allée were cherished far and wide by visitors to the park. We have already heard tales of childhood memories, engagements and beautiful walks under its shade between families and friends. We would love to hear more of your stories over the years from under the allée as a way to help its memory live on while the new trees begin to form strong roots and grow big for a new generation of park lovers to enjoy. Please share your experiences and photos with us!

South Park Tree Planting with MBA
On Friday, April 19, we planted 156 trees in South Park with the Young Constructors Committee of the Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania (MBA) and the Office of the Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato in honor of Earth Day! We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers for their hard work, to Allegheny County for providing the supplies for deer protection and to the Allegheny County Park Rangers for leading the event. The trees planted include 16 species that were grown by Tree Pittsburgh using the funds from our Tree Fund.
If you want to join the impact in this area of South Park then register and join us during Park ‘til Dark on May 18 when we plan to plant 100 more trees.

North Park Tree Planting with Kushkushkee Trail Chapter
On Thursday, April 11, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kushkushkee Trail Chapter, braved storms to plant 20 trees in North Park. We would like to thank them for their generous donation to our Tree Fund and for volunteering their time to improve North Park!
“A tree planting project in honor of Arbor Day has been a much-requested project by our Kushkushkee Trail NSDAR Chapter members. As our Conservation Committee started researching possible locations, North Park was naturally at the top of the list. The Kushkushkee Trail Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is located in the North Hills, and many of our members enjoy all the park has to offer. We previously did a clean-up near the Goldstar Pavilion, and we removed invasive species and planted willow clippings along Irwin Run just outside North Park. We have also hosted our New Members Welcome Picnic in the park. Personally, I live adjacent to North Park and enjoy the view of the trails from my back windows. I walk my dog in the park daily, and I enjoy paddle boarding on the lake and going to the pool in the summer with family and friends. The decorated holiday tree at Pie Traynor always makes me smile. I feel so blessed to live where I do, next to this beautiful resource that I see used every day by so many, and I am happy to support it. Planning this project with my DAR Chapter has been a joy!” - Stephanie Zoffel, Conservation Committee Chair, Kushkushkee Trail Chapter, NSDAR

Help Us Continue to Plant Trees By Making a Donation to our Tree Fund
|
Every year, the Allegheny County Parks Foundation plants trees in our county’s nine parks in partnership with Allegheny County. In addition to their majestic beauty, trees improve the parks’ ecology by increasing our region’s declining tree canopy, shoring up riparian borders to clean rainwater that flows into streams, help storm water management by absorbing runoff and provide shelter and food for birds and wildlife.
