Celebrating 56 years of the
Fair Housing Act
Habitat for Humanity is propelled by a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We devote ourselves to creating that world because we believe everyone — every single one of us, regardless of who we are or where we come from — deserves a decent life and deserves the opportunity for a better future.
This year, we commemorate the 56th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, the landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, that made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings because of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, and disability.
We honor our vision by building affordable houses — and through those houses, the strength, stability and self-reliance that ALL families need in order to achieve a better life.
