Noteworthy Sundays Library Concerts Kick Off in March with Kerensa Gray's "When Books Sing"
The Washington County Free Library continues its longstanding Noteworthy Sundays at Your Library Concert series for 2024 with a concert on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at 3 PM in the Alice Virginia and David W. Fletcher Library Community Room.
Decades of honing and refining a unique vocal style, multiple recordings and many stage performances have cemented Kerensa Gray’s reputation as a singer and storyteller, composer, and teacher. Often compared to jazz royalty the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and songstresses of past generations, she interweaves elements of Jazz, folk, blues, R&B, and classical to create sound that is undeniably hers.
This performance, “When Books Sing,” will highlight songs that intertwine with themes from some of the most beloved stories in literature from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens.
This program is generously supported by the City of Hagerstown, the Friends of the Library, the Washington County Arts Council, and the Western Maryland Regional Library.
Register to save your seat now on our online calendar available through washcolibrary.org. You won’t want to miss this!

The Potomac Playmakers presents,
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
The Potomac Playmakers presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” In this classic Rachel Sheinkin musical, an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that disqualifies them from the competition. Six spellers enter but only one leaves as the champion! At least the losers get a juice box! Some audience participation is included. Performed with permission from Music Theatre International, this musical is rated PG-13 due to language and theme.

Intro to Pysanky Workshop | |
With a backdrop of Ukrainian folk music as well as folk tales read to you from Pysanky Egg books, you will learn beginner skills that will enable you to “write” beautiful Pysanky eggs! Many tips will be shared and you will receive instructional handouts. The purpose of creating Pysanky, according to Ukrainian folk tales, is to transfer goodness from the household to the designs which helps restrain evil in the world. Once varnished, the decorated egg is quite sturdy although still breakable.
The art of Pysanka (singular) (from Ukrainian very “pysaty” – to write) dates from antiquity.
From a Christian perspective, the symbolism of the egg represents the rebirth of man. Christians treat the egg as a symbol of the tomb from which Christ arose. The pysanka is made during the last week of Lent per the Catholic and Orthodox calendars. To give a pysanka is to give a symbolic gift of life.

Mapping Maryland Through History Explores Donated Collection of
Rare Maps at Washington County Free Library in Detail
Washington County Free Library is excited to host “The Mapping of Maryland” on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at 2 PM-4 PM in the Alice Virginia and David W. Fletcher Library Community Room. This program will feature Dr. Edward Papenfuse, former Archivist of the State of Maryland, who will discuss the early mapping of Maryland, and Dr. Ira Lourie, who will present a summary of the map collection that he donated to the Western Maryland Room of the Washington County Free Library.
The presenters will provide details on several maps of special importance in Hagerstown, a 1755 map of Virginia and Maryland showing local ferries and trails, an 1824 map of Maryland showing the name “Hagerstown” instead of “Elizabethtown,” and an 1842 map of Maryland and Delaware showing a railroad coming into “Hub City.”
Ira and Carrol Lourie donated the Ira S. Lourie map collection to WCFL’s John Clinton Frye Western Maryland Room at the end of 2019. The collection includes 190 antique maps and atlases, and two rare book sets. The maps, six dating back to the late 17th century, focus on Maryland.
To register for this event, please access the library’s online event calendar via washcolibrary.org or save your seat by searching for the keyword “map” at wcfl.librarymarket.com.

Shirley Temple Black:
"From Child Star to Diplomat" by JoAnn Peterson
On March 22, 2024, at 6:00 PM, JoAnn Peterson of Frostburg, MD, a professional actor of stage and film, will be doing a first-person portrayal of Shirley Temple Black titled “From Child Star to Diplomat” at the Miller House. As a child star, Shirley Temple was the top box office draw from 1935-1938 in the world. She grew up to become a diplomat, author, and loving mother.
The presentation is in the Chautauqua-style format, beginning with a monologue which JoAnn wrote based on extensive research using primary and secondary sources, articles, books, films, and interviews, followed by Q&A of Shirley, and then a Q&A of JoAnn after she breaks character.
The earrings and blouse worn by JoAnn during her portrayal actually belonged to Shirley. The blouse was worn at her first reception in Prague as Ambassador to Czechoslovakia. JoAnn owns and will display Shirley’s iconic ensemble worn when she received the Screen Actor’s Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award, purchased from Shirley’s estate. This is very appropriate since JoAnn’s portrayal is a tribute to the achievements of Shirley Temple Black’s whole life, not just her years as a child star.
Doing first person portrayals combines JoAnn’s love of acting and history. Her research of Ambassador Black has led JoAnn to California, New York City, and Prague, Czech Republic, where she toured the US Embassy and Ambassador’s Residence and interviewed four women who worked under Shirley. She also interviewed Michael Zantovsky, the right-hand man of Vaclav Havel, the dissident who became President of Czechoslovakia, and whom Shirley befriended.
This event will have light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar that will feature the classic Shirley Temple drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic version available). Call us with questions or to reserve your ticket at 301-797-8782 or email info@washcohistory.org.

About the Show...
The two time Tony Award winning hit musical Green Day’s American Idiot, based on the Grammy Award winning multi-platinum album, boldly takes the American musical where it is never gone before. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back home to attend to familial responsibilities, and Johnnys attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. An energy-fueled rock opera, American Idiot, features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Days groundbreaking album to execute the story line.
