The Enduring Legacy of UCSB Reads

For 18 years, the UCSB Reads program has brought the campus and Santa Barbara communities together to read a common book that explores compelling interdisciplinary issues of our time.

The program’s success over the years is due to the support of the University at large as well as Library innovators like Gene Lucas, whose 36-year career at UCSB spanned various roles, most notably as Executive Vice Chancellor and Acting University Librarian.
University Librarian Kristin Antelman Retires
University Librarian Kristin Antelman will retire after the end of the current academic year. A search advisory committee will be formed to conduct a national search for our next University Librarian.

The University is very grateful for the exemplary leadership Kristin has provided since joining our campus in 2018.
New Space:
The "Fish Bowl"
In conjunction with UCSB Reads 2024, we've created the "Fish Bowl," a new pop-up space for collaborative art making.

Located inside the Davidson Entrance (1st Floor Ocean Side), the Fish Bowl is available for drop-in use by current UCSB students, faculty, and staff during Library building hours. Basic art supplies are provided.
New Resource:
Ancestry Library Edition
UCSB affiliates now enjoy free access to Ancestry Library Edition thanks to a new Library subscription.

This online genealogy resource contains 4,000+ databases of family information, including U.S. Federal Census records from 1790 forward; the American Genealogical Biographical Index; Passenger and Immigration Lists Index; and court, land, and probate records.
In the Media:
UCSB Makerspace
The opening of Library's new UCSB Makerspace in January was featured in The Current, The Daily Nexus, The Bottom Line, and Associated Students UCSB TV.
Binder Infographic
Our Research Data Services (RDS) team has created an infographic about Binder, an open-source free service for researchers to bundle their project and computing environment.

Visit the new Research Computing and Data website to discover more RDS Data Literacy Series infographics and other resources.
New Digital Exhibitions
We've published digital companion exhibitions to three exhibitions that are currently on display in the Library:
Expanded Access to UCPMS
Beginning March 4, all UCSB academic and research employees covered by the Presidential Open Access Policy will join Senate faculty authors in receiving alerts from the University of California Publication Management System (UCPMS).

UCPMS makes it easier for UC authors to upload scholarly articles to eScholarship, UC’s systemwide open access repository and publishing platform.
