New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

Updates on the Pandemic Treaty
After failing to reach agreement on many issues in the ninth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB9, March 18-28, 2024), the INB9 reconvened April 29 to May 10, 2024. When that session also failed to finalize the treaty language, representatives from the WHO's 194 member states agreed to continue negotiations which have extended to date with no final draft in place. The plan was to present the finalized draft for adoption of legally-binding text at the World Health Assembly which runs May 27, 2024 to June 1, 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland, so time has run out. The world waits to see what happens next week in Geneva.
It is likely that negotiations will continue.
The latest public version (PDF) of the negotiating treaty text was published on 22 April 2024.
https://tinyurl.com/35j5t4yf See Article 5:
“Article 5. One Health
1. The Parties commit to promote a One Health approach for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, recognizing the interconnection between people, animals and the environment, that is coherent, integrated, coordinated and collaborative among all relevant organizations, sectors and actors, taking into account national circumstances.
2. The Parties commit to identify and address the drivers of pandemics and the emergence and re-emergence of disease at the human-animal-environment interface through the introduction and integration of interventions into relevant pandemic prevention, preparedness and response plans.
3. Each Party shall, in accordance with its national context, protect human, animal and plant health, with support from WHO and other relevant international organizations, by:
(a) implementing and regularly reviewing relevant national policies and strategies that reflect a One Health approach as it relates to pandemic prevention, preparedness and response;
(b) promoting the effective and meaningful engagement of communities in the development and implementation of policies, strategies and measures to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks; and
(c) promoting or establishing One Health joint training and continuing education programmes for human, animal and environmental health workforces to build relevant and complementary skills, capacities and capabilities.
4. The modalities, terms and conditions and operational dimensions of a One Health approach shall be further defined in an instrument that takes into consideration the provisions of the International Health Regulations (2005) and will be operational by 31 May 2026.”

Human impact on animals and environment
Forced to eat bat feces, chimps could spread deadly viruses to humans
April 22, 2024 Author: Ann Gibbons In: Science - News
Tobacco farming is driving apes to seek unusual food source, brimming with pathogens. Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and duiker antelopes in Uganda were observed eating or licking bat guano that was later found to contain 26 previously unknown viruses, along with a coronavirus related to SARS-CoV-2. Researchers found that the guano contained essential nutrients that wild chimps and other animals usually get by eating raffia palm pith. But farmers in the area cleared raffia palms from 2006 to 2012 to make strings for drying tobacco for the international market, leaving animals to seek other sources of nutrients. The findings demonstrate a potential zoonotic pathogen pathway from bats to mammals. https://tinyurl.com/4h3udce3

Avian Influenza and One Health
May 1, 2024
Author: Camille Ledoux In: UTMB One Health Newsletter
“According to the WHO, 889 cases of avian influenza have been reported in humans globally since 2003. Considering that the CDC estimates that 9.3 to 41 million Americans become ill with the flu each year, 889 avian flu cases over a 21 year period is an incredibly small fraction of the overall flu caseload. When humans do contract avian influenza, however, the resultant infection can be deadly. The WHO reports that fifty-two percent of avian influenza infections in humans result in death. Because of the extensive food safety measures, the placement of receptors in our lungs, and the fact that few Americans work in the agriculture industry, the overall risk to the public of contracting avian influenza is quite low.” https://tinyurl.com/yc4h8u2t

Discussions and decisions about One Health issues are often dominated by veterinary and human health sciences, sidelining the social sciences despite the crucial role of disciplines like psychology, sociology, and communications in understanding human behaviour. Seminal 2005 One Health Report -
Animal Health at the Crossroads:
Preventing, Detecting, and Diagnosing Animal Diseases
2005 Consensus Study Report from the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) with contributing authors from the National Research Council, the Division on Earth and Life Studies, the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the Committee on Assessing the Nation's Framework for Addressing Animal Diseases. "Mad Cow" disease (BSE) in June 2005 illustrated the economic impact of disease outbreaks, as countries closed their markets to beef and beef products. Emerging diseases also threaten public health -- 11 out of 12 of the major global disease outbreaks over the last decade were from zoonotic agents (that spread from animals to humans). This study finds that, in general, the U.S. animal health framework has been slow to take advantage of state-of-the-art technologies being used to protect public health; better diagnostic tests for identifying all animal diseases should be made a priority. The report also recommends that the nation establish a high-level, authoritative, and accountable coordinating mechanism to engage and enhance partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies, and the private sector. https://tinyurl.com/58bkfbja

Cordoba, Spain. Registration is now open! Cohosted by the Institute for Advanced Social Studies - Spanish Research Council (IESA-CSIC), the University of Córdoba, and the Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. The concept of “wild” often refers to elements of nature that remain untamed and unaltered by human intervention. Some argue that in today’s interconnected world, true wild, untouched by human influence, is exceedingly rare or perhaps even nonexistent. What on Earth is a Policy Impact Statement? A Guide to Appropriate Policy Communication in Wildlife and Conservation Research
Expert Talk hosted by the International Alliance Against Health Risk of Wildlife Trade. Effective exchange of information between the policymakers and scientists is infrequent. Policymakers rarely obtain ‘evidence’ directly from journal articles. In response, several journals in conservation science have requested, or even required, policy impact statements as an attempt to highlight relevance to policymakers and make primary ‘evidence’ more readily identified. Dr. Katie Woolaston will show that policy statements rarely provide enough clear information to policymakers, will provide an overview of the policymaking process and explain why that knowledge is relevant to those communicating wildlife and conservation research. She’ll make recommendations for authors to improve communication so policymakers can more easily identify relevant evidence for consideration in decision making. Join the webinar.

April 16, 2024 Webinar
One Health and Animal Research:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Speaker Jerrold Tannenbaum. This webinar described the crucial role laboratory animal research played in the development of the concept of One Medicine, the historical precursor of One Health. The discussion reviewed differing approaches to One Health and discussed how biomedical animal research can be an important component of some of these approaches. The webinar also highlighted current approaches to One Health that provide challenges to laboratory animal research. These include the increasing use of privately owned animals, mainly pet cats and dogs, in clinical studies and trials. Of greater concern are approaches to One Health that diminish the importance of human and animal research that benefits human health; would require the diversion of critical resources away from animal research; incorporate concepts of “health” (such as environmental health, ecosystem health, or planetary health) that are unhelpful and may be incoherent; and include societal or geopolitical considerations that have no clear connection to science-driven biomedical research. The webinar examined how the biomedical research community can recognize, and counter approaches to One Health that are inimical to or threaten animal research. The discussion suggested ways the community can support and engage in approaches to One Health that appropriately benefit people, animals, and the environment. https://tinyurl.com/3e8c38xu
