Shedd Aquarium Field Trip 2024

For the past 21 years, RB Applied Zoology students have been going to the John G. Shedd Aquarium for a full-day field trip as a culminating activity for their unit on Aquatic Ecosystems.

Students see firsthand what they have learned about the three types of aquatic ecosystems (marine, freshwater, and brackish water), the three types of fish, issues facing fish, including overfishing and habitat loss, and revisiting the impact climate change has on coral reefs. Additionally, students got to witness Shedd's program to selectively breed corals that are more resistant to high temperatures. Students observed the behaviors of various animals, including several marine mammals (belugas, Pacific white-sided dolphins, and California sea lions), two species of penguins, and several shark species in both reef and kelp ecosystems. They also observed the impact various invasive species are having on the Great Lakes and other bodies of water around the world. Finally, students collected and analyzed data about fish respiration rates based on various temperatures.
