We thank the Staff, Volunteers, and a real shout out goes to our Public Works, Police and Parks and Rec Staff, who put in long hours in intense heat to pull off another Cricket Coup in Morrisville! It just goes to show how we can transform our communities through diversity. We also thank Major League Cricket for their partnership with the Town and to all of the sponsors!
We are the Cricket Capital of the United States!
Moving forward, we will take the feedback many of you provided us, and will be exploring improvements to the facility (lights, drainage, etc) so we can host more International and MLC games. Keep in mind that for every game we host, we would get about $432,00 from the ICC. (so I hear) Wake County Hotel Occupancy Tax Revenue can help us get there!
Lets continue to make Cricket History!

Former President Trump Survives Assasination Attempt
https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-rally-shooting-07-14-24/index.html
On July 13, 2024, an assassination attempt was made on former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired shots from an elevated position outside the venue while Trump was giving a speech. Trump was injured, sustaining a wound to his right ear. Additionally, a rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured before Crooks was taken down by security and also killed (Wikipedia) (Washington Examiner).
The FBI has classified this incident as an attempted assassination and is investigating how the shooter was able to get so close to the event site. The Secret Service's security measures are under scrutiny following this breach (Wikipedia).
In response to the attack, Trump expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he received, attributing his survival to divine intervention. He also called for unity and resilience in the face of such violence
We pray for Former President Trump, his family and the nation during these very divisive times.
Our elections and democracy should be determined by ballots not bullets. Let us hope and pray that our nation can unite in our diversity, and continue to navigate through these tough times together. Our enemies should not be our own fellow citizens, but focusing on the enemies of humanity, war, poverty, disease and hate.
We are and should always be the United, not Divided States of America.

DIVERSITY'S BENEFITS IN ACTION IN CRICKET IN MORRISVILLE'S CRICKET MOVE
My Cricket Message:

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion.
There are three words we hear often at panels and conferences, as business leaders and elected and community leaders explore how to grow more diverse and inclusive workplaces and communities. Much of the debate recently has focused on the recent UNC System decision to scrap DEI programs. I could write a separate column on this topic, but the pros and cons of DEI programs continue to be explored and debated.
So, I began my day with a Chat GPT question: How can diversity bring positive change to communities?
Forget Chat GPT for now. I found my answer in the Town of Morrisville’s cricket transformation.
Every day in Morrisville, as a council member and resident, I see something that makes our community uniquely strong and vibrant: our diversity. Morrisville is a tapestry of cultures, traditions and stories from around the world. Each thread in this tapestry brings its own rich history, perspective and contribution, making our community a beautiful mosaic of humanity.
Get the top stories in your inbox every afternoon
Our Live Connected Live Well brand statement means more than being connected to beautiful greenways, parks and a high quality of life.
It also means that the connections our regions have with many different cultures can bring true transformation to our communities. I have often mention in my speeches around the region that I can have a samosa, banh mi sandwich and pulled pork sandwich in one hand, listen to bluegrass and Bollywood music playing in the background, as I find my way to a Holi or Diwali event, Dragon Boat Festival or any number of cultural activities where I can be introduced to almost every culture in the world. It almost makes me feel like I can cancel the trip to Disney’s Epcot and experience the world right in our own backyard.
Make no mistake. The Alexander Hamilton musical got it right: immigrants get the job done. Our cricket transformation clearly validates this line from the Tony-award winning musical.
There is no greater example of the positive cultural and economic impact of these global connections than Morrisville’s emergence as the Cricket Capital of the United States.
During the opening ceremony of the Major League Cricket championships this week. I could not help but think of the important role that immigrants have played in transforming Morrisville into a destination for some of the best cricket players in the world. This story is a reminder of the true power of diversity to transform communities and is an everlasting reminder that diversity is the true power behind a vibrant, thriving democracy.
Think of it.
Our cricket journey began when immigrants from cricket-loving nations such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Caribbean introduced the sport to Morrisville. These communities brought their love for the game with them, fostering a new sports culture in the area.
The establishment of local cricket clubs and leagues fueled major interest in these programs. Flash back to 10 – 12 years ago, pre- Church Street Park and the Shiloh Fields and Cedar Fork District Park were always packed with avid cricket players. It was a big deal then (and still is) to attend the finals of a local league championship, and finally, in 2021, Morrisville was able to field a Minor League Cricket Team, the Morrisville Cardinals, now Raptors. (There are now 26 Minor League Teams)
Former Morrisville Mayor Mark Stohlman reveals that it was the introduction of the Town of Morrisville by the Triangle Cricket League to the International Cricket Council (ICC) which led to the first World Cup qualifiers played at Church Street Park in 2018. The momentum which began with ICC has pushed the game of cricket to a greater level than we imagined back then.
Finally, various youth programs and academies have been established, and these programs have nurtured young talent but also provide opportunities for physical activity, discipline, and teamwork. Talented young cricketers can get access to scholarships and pathways to professional cricket, both in the U.S. and internationally. I can only see more opportunities in the future as we continue to expand our cricket facilities and grow the game.
World Cup cricket legend Alvin Kallacharen, who resides in Morrisville, has coached and mentored many youth.
Who knows — maybe one day Morrisville will produce a cricket Olympian (2028 Los Angeles Games).
At the end of the day, cricket has promoted cultural exchange and community bonding, providing a sense of belonging and friendship. Fans can experience this at the Major League Cricket tournaments as they can enjoy food, music and traditions from various countries. The fan energy at these events is electric and contagious!
During these very divisive times, cricket is serving as a bridge between different cultures, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

MAJOR LEAGUE CRICKET IS A BIG DEAL
Major League Cricket, now in its second season, was founded in 2019 to grow the game of cricket in areas with significant immigrant populations. Major League Cricket (MLC) is funded by American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), which is a group of investors including prominent business leaders and technology entrepreneurs. It is often overlooked that major MLC investors include Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe, and Ross Perot Jr. Not a bad group of investors to have involved in any venture. These seasoned business leaders have provided significant financial backing to help establish and grow MLC, aiming to make it a premier cricket league in the United States.
It really should be no surprise that MLC wanted to seize the market opportunity in Morrisville. I was proud of Council’s decision to partner with MLC investing over $3.5 million to upgrade Church Street Park to where it is today.
Last week at the first Washington Freedom game, Major League Cricket CEO Vijay Srinivasan shared with me his excitement to be back in Morrisville. He is very optimistic about the growth of the nation’s first professional cricket league. MLC Co-founder Sameer Mehta was also so excited to be back in the Triangle and shares the hope that we can upgrade our lights so we can host more night matches.
| |
We often forget that the growth of cricket contributes to the Triangle economy. From the construction of cricket grounds to the purchase of equipment, ticket sales, booked hotels and support of our local businesses, cricket continues to grow our economy in Wake County. EDPNC CEO Chris Chung and Gov. Roy Cooper reminded us at a number of conferences this year that tourism has contributed at least $35 billion to the state coffers. Global media coverage can increase awareness of the Triangle region for visitors and even companies looking expand into the old North State. Cooper and Chung should be happy with this marketing of our state to the rest of the world.
Upgrades to our cricket facilities including more state of the art drainage systems, more stadium seating and parking could actually help us bring more international events, like the T20 Cricket World Cup which was played this year in the west Indies and in New York.
In an interview with WPTF Radio this week, Director of Corporate Development Selby Sturzenegger shared her excitement that the US markets are responding to the faster T20 format (3 hours), and higher scoring games. In her words, “Cricket is more than players wearing white, sipping tea and playing cricket for five days. Major League Cricket is betting their future growth on baseball fans also attending fast-paced, higher-scoring cricket games.
Conversations with the Wake County Commissioners need to take place soon regarding the potential of hotel occupancy funding for future expansions of our cricket stadium.Flash back to 2014 when the Wake County Commissioners allocated $3 million in funding to the Wake Competition Center, the training hub for the Carolina Hurricanes.
It is time to repeat this history.
And I do not think that is a stretch to explore state economic development funding as I have broached the topic with Speaker Tim Moore and soon-to-be Speaker Destin Hall.
Certainly more advocacy and collaboration with state and local officials can help us secure more funding for facility expansions.

IMMIGRANTS GET THE JOB DONE
As an avid runner, every July 4, I run to my favorite patriotic music. On Saturday, I ran to the music of “Hamilton,” running through Church Street Park, a multipurpose park that has now emerged as a destination to some of the best cricket players in the world.
Every time I listen to the music or watch the musical on Disney, I get very emotional as the Hamilton story demonstrates the true transformation that immigrants can bring to our nation.
As we kicked off the opening ceremony for Major League Cricket with the national anthem, I could not help how timely it was that we were celebrating cricket on the heels of the celebrating American Independence Day. As we watched the opening match together, Morrisville Mayor TJ Cawley reminded me that our emergence as the cricket capital of the United States also means progress and opportunity for our entire region.
| |
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM OUR CRICKET JOURNEY?
Major League Cricket in Morrisville and our region is a reminder that diversity is the true power behind a vibrant democracy. The true power of the all-American project is that we can call come from far away places, bring our ideas, cultural traditions, sports from our motherland to the United States and bring true transformation to our nation. I consider it a blessing that we can see the American story play out in Morrisville as we celebrate the growth of the global sport of cricket.
As I ran in intense heat up my last hill, I blasted “My Shot.” Like Alexander Hamilton, the immigrants who brought the global sport of cricket, are young, scrappy and hungry like their country.
We should be grateful that they took their shot, to bring the global sport of cricket to our town, and of course, now take another shot to transform the Town of Morrisville to be the cricket capital of the United States and a destination for some of the best cricket players in the world. This shot will serve as a bridge to cultures from all over the world and help us grow our economy.
During a live Radio Nyra interview with me at one of the games, former Morrisville Mayor Mark Stohlman made my day when he said he could see a day when North Carolina could have our own professional cricket team. Also, we could see Team USA train here at least a few times a year and to have more Major League Cricket played in Morrisville.
Please join us this week for the remaining matches which you can find at www.majorleaguecricket.com. San Francisco makes their debut this week at Church Street Park. On Monday, we look forward to having United States Congresswoman Deb Ross, Wake County commissioners and state officials for a ceremony before the game when the Seattle Orcas take on the San Francisco Unicorns.
I look forward to the next chapter in our cricket transformation, which will continue because of the true transformational power of diversity.
Let’s keep moving forward and yes, taking our shot to cricket greatness right here in the Research Triangle.

J.D. Vance is an American author, venture capitalist, and is the Junior United States Senator from Ohio. He gained national attention with the publication of his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis," in 2016. The book, which details his upbringing in a poor Rust Belt town and the struggles of the white working class, became a bestseller and was later adapted into a film by Netflix.
Vance was born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps before attending Ohio State University and later Yale Law School. After graduating, he worked in the venture capital industry in Silicon Valley.
In 2021, Vance announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate from Ohio as a Republican, and he won the election in 2022. His political positions and rhetoric have been aligned with the populist and nationalist elements within the Republican Party.
He is Married to an Indian American, Usha Vance (née Chilukuri). She is an accomplished attorney and a graduate of Yale Law School, where she and J.D. met. Usha has worked as a law clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. They have three children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.

WHY DID TRUMP PICK JD VANCE?
It wasn’t the theatrical reveal that Donald Trump wanted, a made-for-TV moment in which the former President would stroll on stage with his VP pick. Instead, he announced on Truth Social that Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio will be his running mate. “After lengthy deliberation and thought,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, he chose Vance because he was “the best person suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States.”
By selecting Vance, Trump has elevated a leading light of the right-wing populist movement spawned by Trump’s rise rather than someone from another faction of the conservative movement. Vance has been a vociferous critic of U.S. aid to Ukraine and other foreign entanglements; a proponent of restrictive immigration policies and an aggressive deportation operation; and a champion of Trump’s protectionist trade regime and high tariffs on imported goods. “It's part of the agenda to re-industrialize the country,” Vance told me in April.
In other words, Trump chose a MAGA favorite who he believes can shore up Rust Belt voters in the battleground states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. He’s also popular with a specific subset of Silicon Valley donors who can tap into their vast reservoirs of wealth in the coming months.
Vance, 39, has an unorthodox biography. As he chronicled in his bestselling 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, he grew up in rural Ohio surrounded by social and economic decline. After serving in the Marines as a combat correspondent covering the Iraq War, Vance enrolled in Ohio State University, graduating summa cum laude in political science and philosophy. He then went to Yale Law School and became editor of the Yale Law Review. His path from there hardly resembles the traditional arc of an America First disciple. Vance worked at the elite law firm Sidley Austin—the same one where Barack and Michelle Obama met—and moved to San Francisco to become a venture capitalist, working with entrepreneur Peter Thiel.
After publishing Hillbilly Elegy, Vance was widely seen as a tribune of the working class. The book is infused with a self-styled conservatism that promotes personal responsibility and self reliance. To critics, it was a disparaging portrait of the deindustrialized heartland that blames the victims for their own downward mobility.
When Trump emerged as a dominant political force, Vance was a vocal opponent and privately wrote to a former law school roommate that he might be “America’s Hitler.” In February 2016, he wrote in USA Today op-ed that “Trump’s actual policy proposals, such as they are, range from immoral to absurd.”
The origins of Vance’s metamorphosis has been a source of endless media speculation. But by the time he became a Senate candidate two years ago, he was a full-throated populist nationalist. His tirades against U.S. assistance to help Ukraine to defend itself against Russia’s invasion caught the attention of Donald Trump, Jr., Trump's eldest son. He soon brought Vance on his popular right-wing podcast Triggered and the two formed a close friendship. Since then, Trump Jr. has been one of his most important advocates, encouraging his father to endorse Vance for Senate in 2022 and to pick him as his running mate in 2024.
In his Truth Social post, Trump commended Vance’s credentials and life story. For the former President, Vance has two profound virtues at once. His hardscrabble background gives him a genuine connection to the white working-class voters who animate Trump’s base and will have outsize influence in the election. At the same time, his rebellion against the elites whose circles he once traveled in gives him an apostate’s appeal.
Those characteristics make him distinctive from Trump’s other top running mate contenders. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was seen as a safe choice well-liked by the business community. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin was another donor-friendly prospect who could help Trump win a state that has gone for Democrats in the last four elections. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida held the potential to grow the Republican tent and court Hispanic voters. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina would have marked a pitch to Black voters and been a popular choice with evangelical Christians.
For his part, Vance was the most ideologically aligned with Trump. Sources familiar with Trump’s thinking say the former President was impressed with his recent television appearances, emphasizing his articulate charisma and ability to think on his feet. The two also developed a personal relationship in recent years. Trump will often call him at random to discuss political strategy. “Sometimes he takes my advice. Sometimes he doesn't take my advice,” Vance told me last spring. “Sometimes he gives me advice.”
If Vance helps Trump with blue collar voters in the midwest, his history of opposing abortion access could hurt the ticket with suburban women. In recent months, he has adopted Trump's position that abortion should be a states-rights issue. "I think states largely should figure out the abortion question themselves," Vance told me, but he didn't rule out some restrictions. "I think it's reasonable for the federal government to set some minimum standard, and then let the states figure out 90% of abortion policy from there."
Vance was the most aggressive of the contenders for the job. Hours after Trump survived an attempted assassination on Saturday, Vance blamed President Joe Biden for the attack. “Today is not just some isolated incident,” Vance wrote. “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all cost. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.” Authorities have not identified the shooter’s motive.
Should Trump win, Vance will become a front runner for the 2028 Republican nomination. Many are expecting a spirited contest among Trump devotees who hope to succeed him in leading the MAGA movement. Some in Trump’s inner circle doubted that the former President would want to choose a potential heir. But in J.D. Vance, he just might have done that.

Raleigh Council Member Corey Branch Withdraws from Mayors Race
Mayor Pro Tem Corey Branch announced at the State Street Community Church that he would withdraw from the mayoral race in order to seek re-election on the Raleigh City Council.
Branch said he was urged by his constituents to serve on the City Council instead of the mayor's office.
Wednesday night, Branch said he was not putting his support behind any candidate at this time.
Branch has served on the City Council for nearly 10 years -- twice as Mayor Pro Tem. Sources told ABC11 that he previously proudly said he was the first person to file to run for mayor this election.
Branch's decision to drop out of the mayoral race leaves four candidates on the ballot at this time: James Shaughnessy, Eugene Myric, Paul Fitts and Janet Cowell
WAKE COUNTY SCHOOLS CONSIDER BANNING CELL PHONES
A group of Raleigh leaders, parents and medical professionals is pushing Wake County school officials to ban mobile devices in schools across the district.
Members of the group — including former Raleigh Councilwoman Nicole Stewart, a family doctor and others — requested the ban Tuesday at a meeting of the Wake County Board of Education. The group is worried about mental health and academic issues stemming from mobile device use.
It's time for us to collectively take this action to ban phones, just like we banned tobacco back in the 90s," Stewart said.
The request comes as state and local leaders have pushed for cellphone bans during the school day. The National Center for Education Statistics reported that 76% of public schools prohibited “non-academic cell phone use” during the 2021-2022 school year.
Several counties in North Carolina have already done that and feedback in those counties indicates students are paying more attention in class and aren’t too bothered by not having their phones because they’re not missing anything happening online if their peers don’t have access to their phones, either, state officials have said.
“Constant interruption is a huge part of it. Children being interrupted in school ruins their attention, brings down their grades and interrupts the teachers, who are constantly trying to learn on a constant basis,” Stewart said. "It's a lot of it's that constant attention and addiction that we need to overcome so they can be successful, productive human beings in the future."
No action was taken yet.

REP. JASON SAINE TO STEP DOWN FROM GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Longtime Republican House Rep. Jason Saine will resign from the North Carolina General Assembly effective Aug. 12.
“After much contemplation and consideration, I am choosing to step from public life to pursue several unique professional opportunities that have presented themselves,” wrote the 50-year-old from Lincoln County in his resignation letter to House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Kings Mountain). “These roles will allow me to continue advocating for the policies I am passionate about, including consulting on several key issues that are close to my heart. I remain open to exploring avenues where I can contribute to policy development within North Carolina and beyond. Saine has served in the General Assembly for 13 years.

NC LAW RESTRICTING MASKS IN PUBLIC BECOMES LAW
North Carolina's contentious restrictions on public mask-wearing became law on Thursday after GOP lawmakers successfully overrode a veto by the state's Democratic governor.
The Senate gave its final stamp of approval in a 30-14 override vote along party lines. The state House initiated the process Wednesday when it voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto during a lengthy session that lasted well into the night.
The ban joins a list of more than 20 gubernatorial vetoes the GOP-dominated North Carolina General Assembly has overridden in the past year. Republicans hold narrow supermajorities in both chambers.
The law, most of which goes into effect immediately, contains different language from the bill that lawmakers first introduced this session. The original proposal had removed a 2020 bipartisan regulation put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic that allowed masking for health reasons, prompting pushback from the public and some Democratic legislators. The lawmakers restored a medical exemption.
The law allows people to wear medical or surgical-grade masks in public to prevent the spread of illness. Law enforcement and property owners can ask people to temporarily remove those masks to verify their identity.
The measure also increases the severity of punishment for crimes committed while wearing a mask, and raises penalties for protesters who purposefully block traffic. The latter provision is scheduled to go into effect Dec. 1.
An unrelated provision on campaign finance was tacked on to the bill during negotiations. The law allows federally registered committees to donate money to state political parties by tapping pots of money that include unlimited contributions from individuals.

PRESIDENT BIDEN BOUNCES BACK IN RALEIGH
Hours after a disappointing debate performance that had some Democrats openly contemplate his removal from the ticket, President Joe Biden delivered an energetic campaign speech in North Carolina that attempted to quell those fears.
Speaking to a crowd of roughly 2,000 supporters in Raleigh, Biden reiterated his belief that former President Donald Trump is bad for the country on issues like abortion and the economy.
The president highlighted false claims Trump repeatedly made during the debate and acknowledged his own poor performance that led some Democrats to panic minutes into the face off
Democrats struggle to respond to Biden debate performance
“I know I’m not a young man,” Biden said to cheers. “I don’t walk as easy as I used to. I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know: I know how to tell the truth!”
Biden added that he would not be running for a second term if he did not believe "with all my heart and soul I can do this."
"Yes you can," the crowd chanted in response.
Biden sounded raspy and confused at Thursday's 90-minute debate. His campaign said he had a cold, but the performance highlighted concerns about his age and fitness to serve another four years as commander in chief.
But a day later, still with a cough and a slightly hoarse voice, Biden campaigned as if were any other Friday on the campaign trail.
He hammered Trump as an extremist on abortion rights and a threat to the future of American democracy if elected again. Using a teleprompter and feeding off the energy of the crowd, he attacked his opponent in ways that were missing from the debate stage.

SECRETARY BUTTIGEG VISITS RALEIGH TO BREAK GROUND ON S LINE
A railroad line, connecting Raleigh to Richmond, has been two decades in the making, but leaders are taking the first step in getting the project off the ground.
There was a groundbreaking ceremony for the new S-Line with Governor Roy Cooper, DOT Secretary Joey Hopkins, and Congressman Wiley Nickel in attendance.
The billion-dollar-plus project is being called a "generational investment' that'll help residents for years to come.
Construction should take two years and it's coming as the state is breaking records for the number of people riding the train.
"(It's) really one of the biggest projects that we're supporting anywhere in the country, even on national terms," said U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
"We know that these investments are really critical," said Governor Roy Cooper.
There will be stops in Wake Forest, Youngsville, and Henderson. All these communities are experiencing a steady rise in population.
Buttigeg also visited Durham and Winston Salem as he launched his Construction Tour in NC!

US SUPREME COURT PUTS $100 MILLION OF OPIOID MONEY IN LIMBO
A U.S. Supreme Court decision stripping protections from the billionaire owners of OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma means it may be years before North Carolina sees payouts from the company over its role in the nationwide opioid crisis.
Thursday’s ruling, though, will not affect the vast majority of the approximately $1.5 billion North Carolina will collect in the coming years through settlements with more than a dozen other companies implicated in the epidemic.
Lawsuits in multiple states have been pending for years against Purdue and members of the Sackler family, which controlled the company as it deceptively marketed its profitable opioid as less addictive than other painkillers.
Under a settlement and bankruptcy plan announced in 2021, the company and the Sacklers agreed to pay billions to state and local governments nationwide, a figure that included an estimated $100 million for North Carolina.
But the high court blocked that plan Thursday, ruling the agreement was faulty because it could not legally protect Sackler family members from future lawsuits — a provision of the settlement challenged by the trustee overseeing Purdue’s bankruptcy on behalf of the U.S. government.

LATEST NATIONAL AND GLOBAL UPDATES
1. President Joe Biden faced renewed pressure to withdraw from America’s presidential race as several members of his Democratic Party voiced concerns about his re-election prospects. Lloyd Doggett, from Texas, became the first Democratic lawmaker to publicly urge Mr Biden to step down as the party’s nominee following his performance in last week’s debate. Meanwhile Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, said it was “legitimate” to ask questions about the president’s abilities. Mr Biden is expected to meet Democratic governors on Wednesday to assuage their fears. He also blamed jet lag for his disastrous performance in the debate, telling reporters that he “nearly fell asleep on stage”.
2. Donald Trump selected J.D. Vance as his running-mate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. A bandaged Mr Trump made his first public appearance two days after surviving an assassination attempt and was greeted with a rapturous ovation. Earlier he wrote on Truth Social, his social-media platform, that he believed Mr Vance to be “best suited” to the role. Mr Vance , the author of “Hillbilly Elegy” and senator for Ohio, once described himself as a “never-Trump guy”. As the leading isolationist in the Senate, he is contemptuous of support for Ukraine. Mr Trump also secured enough votes from delegates to officially become the party’s presidential nominee.
3. Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis formally endorsed Donald Trump in headline speeches at the Republican national convention in Milwaukee. Both Ms Haley and Mr DeSantis had challenged the former president for the Republican nomination, but were gushing in their praise for their former rival. American billionaires are also backing Mr Trump. Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, prominent venture capitalists, said they would donate to Mr Trump’s campaign. Elon Musk, a tech entrepreneur, pledged around $45m per month.
4. A federal judge dismissed a case against Mr Trump over his handling of classified documents. Aileen Cannon, whom Mr Trump appointed to the bench, argued that the appointment of Jack Smith, the special counsel prosecuting the case, was unconstitutional because he had not been selected by the president or confirmed by the Senate. Mr Smith will probably appeal against the ruling.
5. Antony Blinken, America’s secretary of state, told two top Israeli officials that civilian casualties in Gaza were “unacceptably high”. The military has stepped up its assault in recent weeks. Earlier authorities in Deir Al-Balah, a region in central Gaza, said that they were unable to provide 700,000 people with drinking water, due to fuel shortages.
6. Ocado, a supplier of warehouse and delivery logistics for supermarkets, including Kroger and Marks & Spencer, raised the profit forecast for its technology business. Its shares rose by around a fifth. The news will calm investors’ fears, as the company has recently suffered a series of blows. Ocado was booted off the FTSE 100 in May because its market capitalisation no longer met the index’s criteria.
7. America’s Federal Reserve is confident that the annual inflation rate is approaching its 2% target. According to Jerome Powell, the central bank’s boss, recent data suggest a “pretty good pace” of price growth. His comments will boost expectations that the Fed will slash interest rates when it meets in September. Mr Powell, however, did not comment on the timing of any possible cut.
8. Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s leader, reportedly said that South Korea will face “devastating consequences” for dropping flyers in its territory. According to state media, the papers contained criticisms of the northern regime. Tensions rose in late May after North Korea sent thousands of rubbish-filled balloons over the border in protest against a separate leafleting campaign by South Korean activists.
9. Scientists said they have found proof of an underground cave on the Moon. It is believed to be at least 100 metres deep and was probably formed millions of years ago out of flowing lava which left behind a tunnel. Researchers reckon that there may be hundreds of other such caves, which could eventually be used to build liveable conditions for humans on the Moon.
10. Donald Trump delivered an impassioned, 90-minute speech as he accepted the Republican nomination. The former president began by describing how he survived the attempt on his life at a rally last week, saying “I had God on my side”. At first he struck a conciliatory tone, promising to unite America, but soon returned to familiar territory. He slammed Joe Biden for inflation, illegal immigration and conflicts abroad. He ended with a vow to “make America great again”.
11. Meanwhile Democrats’ concerns about the viability of Joe Biden’s candidacy are growing. According to the Washington Post, Barack Obama privately told party allies that he thinks Mr Biden’s chances of winning in November have diminished. Nancy Pelosi, a former House speaker, reportedly says so too. The president, who has tried to quell concerns in interviews and at campaign events, is currently self-isolating in Delaware with “mild” covid-19 symptoms.
12. An IT outage caused businesses around the world to grind to a halt after thousands of workers were unable to log on to their computers. The outage was blamed on an update to software provided by CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity firm, which is thought to have caused problems with Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Airports, retailers, and the London Stock Exchange are among some of the businesses that are reportedly affected.
