NEWS RELEASE
Clayton County Senior Services Earns Innovation Award

(Clayton County, GA) - The Clayton County Senior Services Department earns the Most Innovative Evidence Based Implementation Partner Award at the Evidence Based Aging Services Coalition (EBASC) Appreciation Luncheon hosted by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

"This award speaks to one of the tenants in our core values which is innovation," said Tori Strawter-Tanks, Senior Services Director. "Our team never says no to an opportunity to try new programs and services, we are willing to blaze the trail to ensure our seniors have everything they need to live their best life and to age independently in their homes."

The EBASC is a coalition comprised of 10 counties (Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Rockdale) in the metropolitan area. The main objective of the EBASC is to convene county-based stakeholders with a mutual desire to expand access of evidence based services to individuals across the ten counties. Evidence-based programs offer proven ways to promote health and prevent disease among older adults.

Clayton County Senior Services is the first department in Georgia to offer Vivo and Mind over Matter: Healthy Bowls, Healthy Bladder (MOM) evidence-based classes. VIVO Fitness is based on the Science of Strength Training and consists of small-group, interactive Zoom classes taught by live instructors. MOM is a researched and proven program designed to give women the tools they need to take control of bladder and bowel leakage.

A Message From the Chief Operations Officer Detrick Stanford
FOCUS ON THE POTENTIAL LEADER’S NEEDS
People often associate great achievement with a number of things: luck, timing, circumstance, or natural talent. The secret to a person’s success often appears to be an elusive quality. The University of Chicago did a five-year study of leading artists, athletes, and scholars to determine what made them successful. Conducted by Dr. Benjamin Bloom, the research was based on anonymous interviews with the top twenty performers in various fields. Included were a variety of professionals such as concert pianists, Olympic swimmers, tennis players, sculptors, mathematicians, and neurologists. Bloom and his team of researchers probed for clues as to how these high achievers developed. For a more complete picture, they also interviewed their families and teachers. The report stated conclusively that drive, determination, and desire, not great natural talent, led to the extraordinary success of these individuals.

Great leaders know the desires of the people they lead. As much as potential leaders respect the knowledge and ability of their leaders, these are secondary matters to them. They don’t care how much their leaders know until they know how much their leaders care . . . about their needs, their dreams, their desires. Once a leader is genuinely interested in the well-being of those around him, the determination and drive of the people in that group are activated in a remarkable way. The starting point of all achievement is drive, determination, and desire.
