Annual Membership Fees Update: Effective April 1st | |
Effective April 1, 2024, the Boy Scouts of America will eliminate the $25 one-time joining fee for new program participants in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouting. They have also increased the regular annual registration fees by $5.00 for youth in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts along with a $5 increase for all adult volunteers. Cub Family Camporee: May 3rd - 5th |
Join us at Cub Adventure Camp for a weekend of fun spring activities including fishing, archery, BB, Crafts, and for 4th and 5th graders, the climbing tower in May. Event check-in is on Saturday morning, but packs can arrive and camp on Friday if desired. You can also just come out for the day. Cub and Webelos Scouts can attend with either their Pack or as a Family campout.

Troop Volunteers Needed: Help a Little and Camp For Free | |
Would your Scouts BSA troop like to camp for free and get three free meals one weekend? Well, troops that volunteer to help staff the Cub Family Camporee on May 3rd - 5th get to camp at our Douglas Fleet Campground for free and get to enjoy Saturday lunch, dinner, and Sunday breakfast in the dining hall. In return, your troop helps out with program events happening on Saturday afternoon, maybe has some older Scouts assist in the kitchen, or helps with the evening campfire.

A list of those changes took effect on January 1st can be found using the link below and includes an update to Eagle Palms and merit badges with significant and minor changes. The FCC Amateur Radio Service and Scouting share a common mission: service to others. The Camp TBS ARC club was formed in 2019 while the affiliated operating station was constructed. The station is located at Camp T. Brady Saunders. The goal of this project is to provide a space for STEM programs in radio and teaching the Radio Merit Badge. Membership is informal and offered to BSA registered youth and adult volunteers at no cost.

The Central Virginia Orienteering Club (@CentralVAOrienteeringClub - CVOC) is presenting its Tenth Annual Orienteering Day. No experience is necessary, and instruction relative to compass and map basics can be provided. The event is primarily directed at Scouts that need to complete a one-mile orienteering course, requiring measuring height and/or distance, for First Class rank. The event can also be used to satisfy part of Orienteering merit badge requirement 7.

National Youth Leadership Training: June 9th - 15th | |

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a week-long course, held at Cub Adventure Camp, that focuses on leadership development. It is the youth-led version of Wood Badge. Graduates learn leadership through proven training techniques and methods tuned for the youth of today. NYLT is “Fun with a Purpose” using games and hands-on experience to teach relevant skills! Learn the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO.

NRA Youth Education Summit: July 16th - 21st | |
NRA Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) is a six-day, all-expense paid leadership and scholarship experience for rising high school juniors and seniors held in the Washington, D.C. area. The summit encourages young adults to become active and knowledgeable U.S. citizens by learning about the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the federal government, and the importance of being active in civic affairs. At the end of the week, select students will be awarded college scholarships based on their leadership skills, debate performance, and overall participation!

New! Cub Scout Program Changes Orientation: March 27th | |
Changes are coming to the Cub Scout Program and, on Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00pm at the Heart of Virginia Leadership Center, there will be an Orientation Session for Roundtable Commissioners, Staff and the individuals who have been identified in each district who will either be a trainer or resource for units on the Cub Scout Program changes are encouraged to attend. The session will be 45–50 minutes long and will provide an overview of the new program that is rolling out on June 1, 2024.

Wood Badge is the ultimate leadership training program of the BSA. The South of the James Training Team is offering Scoutmaster / Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training on September 21st at T. Brady Saunders for registered leaders throughout the Heart of Virginia Council. This training is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. The cost is FREE and includes water, light refreshments, and "Trained" patches for leaders who have completed all training requirements for their registered position.

Every Cub Scout deserves a trained leader! Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program, with one part completed online and the other in-person. Den Chief Training combines fun and enjoyment with an excellent character-building experience. Participants will learn leadership, organization, and most importantly, how to work with Cub Scouts. This training is for youth who are or want to be a Den Chief to a Cub Scout, Webelos to Arrow of Light Den. It is also for registered adult leaders who want to learn the duties and roles of Den Chiefs and who will be working with Den Chiefs. Training takes place on October 19th at Camp T. Brady Saunders.

Huguenot Trail Pinewood Derby: March 23rd |
Pack 836, Pack 876, and Troop 876 will be hosting Huguenot Trail District's 2024 Pinewood Derby. All are welcome to race, not only 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers at the Pack level. Pre-registration is required to allow us to set up heats in advance. Awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each Den level. Siblings and parents are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Outlaw Class for each Den level.

A great way to honor your Eagle Scout is to sponsor a personally engraved Eagle Brick. The cost is $200 per brick which includes engraving of up to eighteen characters per line (letters, space and punctuation) with a maximum of two lines. 2024 Eagle Challenge Brick orders are due Friday, July 12th, 2024.
