Success Stories

Scouts earn Disability Awareness Badge

Resources for Independent Living recently hosted an event for Webelo scouts and their parents at their office. Over 42 people attended to obtain their “Disability Awareness Badge.”

Scouts participated in different activities to experience what people with disabilities face each day. The experiential component was followed with a robust Q&A where RIL staff answered questions from the scouts on a variety of topics.

RIL staff are reaching out to schedule other troops so that they can also obtain a Disability Awareness Badge and the agency hopes to have regular monthly presentations.

Winchester CIL helps fulfill consumer's job, IL goals

Through his DARS VR counselor, a Winchester man was referred to Access Independence to find a job, develop a budget, obtain a car for work and learn the transit system. He was also looking for more recreational opportunities in which to participate.

Today he is working part-time at a local automotive shop, he is licensed to drive his own vehicle and living in a subsidized apartment complex for people with disabilities. He is working with the Virginia Cooperative Extension learning how to budget his money and participated in AI's ice cream social.

AIC assists consumers' transition to life after prison

Appalachian Independence Center has made strides helping people with disabilities in the Galax region who were incarcerated to re-enter their communities and regain their previous lives.

AIC peer counselors have worked with consumers to restore voting rights, obtain cell phones and access disability benefits. In one case, a peer counselor helped a consumer keep the electricity on so they could remain in their home.

Program Highlight

VAIL adapts outdoor recreation program

Outdoor Adaptive Recreation (OAR) is Valley Associates for Independent Living's (VAIL) recent program focusing on getting individuals with mobility impairments in the Lexington/Rockbridge area outside and enjoying nature, exercising, and socializing together.

OAR coordinates accessible outdoor adventures including bird watching, hiking and strolling, wildlife photography, handcycling, kayaking, and so much more.

These photos were taken during VAIL's Wintergreen Day outing this winter.
