May 27, 2024, marks the anticipated commencement of the Beach Creek Culvert Replacement project, necessitating the closure of Crescent Road East.
Crescent Road East will be closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic until the end of the project in October 2024 (areas marked in map). Traffic control and detours will be in place and local residents will continue to have access to their properties.
This project is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at replacing two deteriorating corrugated steel culverts crucial to maintaining the integrity of the local ecosystem and safeguarding vital infrastructure.
The culverts, located beneath a deep road embankment crossing Beach Creek, are unable to withstand current and future pressures. Failure of these culverts would not only lead to flooding and collapse of the embankment, but also jeopardize the natural habitat supporting spawning coho salmon.
Additionally, a collapse would pose a serious threat to the major sanitary sewer trunk main servicing the commercial and residential core of the municipality, potentially resulting in a raw sewage spill into Beach Creek and, ultimately, into the Strait of Georgia.
We thank you for your patience as we complete this essential work.
