Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

August 7 - 11, 2023

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Lane Closures

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY)

I-495 North

Monday, August 7, through Thursday, August 10, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway for pipe, bridge, and embankment work.

Wednesday, August 9, through Friday, August 11, 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Periodic stoppages of all traffic for up to 30 minutes on northbound I-495 at Georgetown Pike for utility relocation work. Following each stoppage, all lanes will reopen to clear traffic before the next stoppage is implemented. Periodic stoppages will occur on the following ramps as part of this work:

I-495 South

Monday, August 7, through Thursday, August 10, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closures on southbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and Dulles Toll Road for pipe, bridge, and embankment work.

Wednesday, August 9, through Friday, August 11, 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Periodic stoppages of all traffic for up to 30 minutes on southbound I-495 at Georgetown Pike for utility relocation work. Following each stoppage, all lanes will reopen to clear traffic before the next stoppage is implemented. Periodic stoppages will occur on the following ramps as part of this work:

Georgetown Pike ramp to I-495 North
I-495 South ramp to Georgetown Pike
George Washington Memorial Parkway ramp to I-495 South

GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL PARKWAY INTERCHANGE

Monday, August 7, and Tuesday, August 8, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 and Georgetown Pike will be narrowed for barrier relocation.

LIVE OAK DRIVE

Monday, August 7, through Friday, August 11, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Live Oak Drive will be reduced to a single lane to accommodate water line work and saw cutting. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

BALLS HILL ROAD

Monday, August 7, through Thursday, August 10, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Balls Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane at the Live Oak Drive intersection to accommodate water line installation. Flagging operations alternating single traffic lanes will be in effect.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE

Monday, August 7, and Tuesday, August 8, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp from northbound I-495 to Georgetown Pike will be narrowed for attenuator setting.

DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE

Dulles Toll Road

Monday, August 7, through Thursday, August 10, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closure on westbound Dulles Toll Road (267 Connector) between Route 123 and the I-495 interchange for pipe, bridge, and embankment work.

Traffic Changes

New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road

Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495

Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge.

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
