In May We Celebrated Accessibility Month!
Parks are cherished as oases of tranquility, where people can reconnect with nature, unwind, and rejuvenate. However, for some members of our community, the simple act of enjoying a day in the park can be fraught with obstacles due to accessibility challenges. While we recognize that the parks in our region still have steps to take to ensure equal access to these spaces, there are lots of beautiful places that are ready to be explored now. In our May blog post, we explored trail options for individuals with accessibility challenges to get out in all 9 of their county parks!

Park 'til Dark & Pour at the Park Recap and Impact Report
Park ’til Dark and Pour at the Park in South Park took place on Saturday, May 18 and were both huge successes! The main goals of these events are to raise awareness for our work, to connect and interact with park users and to fundraise for our organization. Between the two events we interacted with over 400 people and grossed $31,401, which will all be poured directly back into your nine Allegheny County Parks! Deer Lakes Park Ecological Assessment Update
We are currently working with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy on our Ecological Assessment and Action Plan in Deer Lakes Park. To date, around two-thirds of the park has been assessed and observations on the ecology are being documented. Findings include a large Oak forest, which is typical in headwater portions of Allegheny County drainages. Additionally, areas in the park where spring ephemerals, wildflowers which are visible for only a short time, are growing have been identified. These findings will be helpful in the future so we can select the best areas of the park for restoration work. Funding for this work has been provided by The Caroline Fredricka Charitable Trust and FedEx. Learn more about our Ecological Assessments and Actions Plans and stay tuned for more updates to this important work!

Settlers Cabin Trail Work with EQT Corporation
On May 9, we organized trail maintenance work in Settlers Cabin Park with volunteers from EQT Corporation. The volunteers worked hard by hiking 2 miles along the blue loop trail conducting corridor clearing along the trail, which helps ensure the trails stay clear and easy to navigate. Volunteers also cleaned up litter at two shelters, in a parking lot and along the tree line. We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers for their hard work and to the Allegheny County Parks Rangers for leading the project! We are so grateful for everyone for making a positive impact in Settlers Cabin Park.
