Human Trafficking on the Mid-Shore: A Conversation with FAS's Beth Anne Dorman and Susan Ahlstrom |
It’s hard to imagine that the Mid-Shore, the home of pleasant living, would have much to do with human trafficking. But that’s precisely what For All Seasons CEO Beth Anne Dorman and Susan Ahlstrom, its regional navigator for human trafficking, want the entire region to do and realize that this devastating is very much part of their community challenge.
Beth Anne and Susan dropped by the Spy studio last week to shed some light on the organization’s intensified efforts to combat the growing human trafficking problem in the Mid-Shore’s rural communities.
Thanks to the recent attention from Governor Wes Moore’s office and legislative efforts by Controller Brooke Lerman, Maryland created the Regional Navigator Program, allowing organizations like For All Seasons to make this a primary focus alongside their traditional services.
They detailed how the Regional Navigator role is instrumental in coordinating between law enforcement, social services, and community resources to offer a multifaceted response to trafficking victims. This includes therapy, social support, law enforcement intervention, and housing, aiming to raise community awareness and dismantle trafficking networks.
Susan also talked about the Red Sand Project to underscore the importance of community involvement in raising awareness. FAS recently kicked off the Red Sand to highlight the pervasive nature of trafficking and the diverse demographics it affects.
This video is approximately seven minutes in length. For more information about For All Seasons, including the Red Sand Project, please go here. For the Human Trafficking Hotline call 888-373-7888.

Repairs Progress on Historic Skipjack "Nathan of Dorchester" at Richardson Maritime Museum |
CAMBRIDGE, MD. - Significant progress has been made in the ongoing restoration efforts for the historic skipjack "Nathan of Dorchester," as the team at Richardson Maritime Museum diligently works on reviving the vessel. Thursday marked a crucial step as the boom, a vital component of the skipjack, was expertly crafted by gluing together 48-foot planks into an octagon shape.
The dedicated team from Richardson Maritime Museum, recognizing the need for a comprehensive overhaul after more than 30 years of service, opted for a departure from traditional repair methods. Instead of the conventional pine tree approach, they utilized a more durable and robust alternative. John Swain, a shipwright with the museum, emphasized the necessity of adapting to changing timber availability, stating, "Its more long lasting. [This new method] and its generally stronger. Using the old method was perfect I mean it worked for years and years but things have changed in terms of timber so we can't get that stuff anymore."

Cambridge Library Opens the Mic | |
There’s no need to sit at home and be bored on these long winter nights. There’s always something going on that’s fun and free in Cambridge where you can hear music, meet new friends, and learn new things!
The Cambridge Library kicked off its new Open Mic/Spoken Work events February 2. Caroline Rodriguez, who works in the information department at the library, is shepherding this event as it was her idea. “I wanted to offer a space that is free in an open and safe environment,” she said.
The library has not offered anything like this before, and Rodriguez is open to suggestions as to how it might best go forward. In addition to spoken word, she invites readings of prose and poetry, a reading of your favorite poem(s) by someone else and even acoustic singer/songwriters. The event is for ages 13 and up.
Like most open mic events, this one offers a sign-up sheet as you come in the door. Time allotted is based on how many folks show up. Fewer people mean more time, and while this first one originally allowed 3 minutes per presenter, Rodriguez was very open to the suggestion that future events give at least 5 minutes of reading/performance time per person.

When Wylde Women Dream is at Main Street Gallery in Mar/Apr |
For Cambridge artist, Tammy Vitale, things that seem worn, torn or broken to most people are her treasures. She takes these cast offs and dreams up a new life for them by refashioning them into something different and altogether new! Colorful collages and engaging mixed media art pieces come to life under her skilled and creative hands.
For March and April Tammy will be showing her collages and mixed media work along with pieces of her beadwork jewelry at the Main Street Gallery where she will be a guest artist. Her pieces will be shown alongside the work of the gallery’s nine member artists. When asked about the creative spelling of wylde in the title of her show, Tammy explained it’s something of a trademark for her. While living and working in Southern Md. she was a part of a coop gallery where the women artists called themselves “wylde women” to express their open and experimental approach to their art. Wild became wylde to differentiate the word from meanings that might come up in a google search.

Guided Birding at Blackwater
Get outside this winter and spring by participating in a free guided birding tour at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy identifying and learning about the many species of birds that inhabit the refuge. Throughout the winter, waterfowl and raptors, including bald eagles, are plentiful, while spring brings in migratory warblers and shorebirds.
Participants meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. for each tour, which may last 3 to 4 hours. The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various points around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive. Binoculars and field guides are highly recommended for an enjoyable experience. There is no fee or advanced registration for these tours. For further information, please call the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 410-228-2677 or visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.
