SOUP FOR SIMPSON

Bellevue High School’s “Soup for Simpson” Club Celebrates 20th Anniversary with $20,000 Fundraising Goal for New Horizons- a teenage homeless shelter in Seattle.

BELLEVUE, WABellevue High School’s student-led fundraising club, Soup for Simpson, is marking its 20th anniversary with an ambitious goal: raising $20,000 to support New Horizons, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young people experiencing homelessness in Seattle.

Soup for Simpson was founded in memory of Hunter Simpson, a former BHS student who, after being diagnosed with brain cancer, continued to embody selflessness and generosity. While attending college, Hunter ate only soup to save money on his meal plan—later donating his unused funds to purchase non-perishable food for New Horizons. Hunter was also a recipient of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but instead of using his wish for himself, he chose to furnish New Horizons’ shelter space. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 19, but his spirit of giving lives on through this annual event.

Started by longtime BHS teacher Kathy AdamsSoup for Simpson has become a cherished school tradition. Each spring, students donate their lunch money to help support New Horizons, turning a simple act of giving into a community-wide celebration featuring live music, free soup, cookies, and a shared commitment to helping others.

To honor 20 years of impact, the club is ramping up efforts to spread the word through social media campaigns and outreach to the local community. We need your help to reach our $20,000 goal!

Our Event is April 2, 2025 at 12:45 PM in the Bellevue High School Commons.

How to Support Soup for Simpson:

  • Donate: Contributions of any amount make a difference.

o   Donations can be made here: https://wa-bellevue-lite.intouchreceipting.com/bellevuehighschoolasb

  • Spread the Word: Share our campaign on social media.
  • Join the Event: Attend and support the students at this year’s Soup for Simpson fundraiser.

For more information on New Horizons, visit https://nhmin.org/.

Let’s come together to honor Hunter’s legacy and make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people in need!

STAFF APPRECIATION

Last month, the PTSA hosted a special event to celebrate both the Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day as a way to show appreciation for teachers and staff. The celebration featured a blend of cultural traditions and heartfelt gestures, including festive Lunar New Year decorations, a tea ceremony, and delicious food representing various Asian cuisines. Once again, we are very thankful to the wonderful volunteers and BHS families for their support.

For our March event, we are asking for cupcake donations for our amazing staff and teachers. Please sign up here if you can donate store-bought cupcakes and drop-off at the front desk office on March 19th (Wednesday) from 7:30am to 9:30am.

Thank you for your generosity and support in making our teachers and staff feel special!

UNICEF

Hey Wolverines!

We would like to bring your attention to the humanitarian crisis happening in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) right now. Over 5 million children urgently need humanitarian assistance due to the ongoing conflict and displacement. Additionally, 1 in 3 children in the country suffers from chronic malnutrition, and over 4.6 million people have been forced to flee their homes.

You can help. Our school’s UNICEF Club is hosting a fundraiser March 10 - March 19, raising money for the Doctors Without Borders program in DRC. Doctors Without Borders have been working in DRC for over 40 years to provide humanitarian aid for all those affected.

You can donate online using this link ("I want to donate to" drop down menu -> "UNICEF DRC- Doctors Without Borders"). Please upload your receipt using this link to ensure that your donation counts towards your class goal.

CLASS OF 2026

Class of 2026 Parents!!!

Thank you so much to those of you who made it to our first parent social on January 23rd. It was great to see so many friendly faces ready to support our students!

For those who could not attend, there are several ways for you to get involved…

  1. Donate to the Class of 2026 Graduation Events fund! We will be fundraising through the second half of this year and into next, with a goal of raising $50,000 to support graduation events including Prom, Baccalaureate, Senior Brunch, and the All-night Grad Party. We would love it if every Junior class family could donate $126 dollars for the Class of 2026. If they did - we would be SO close to reaching our goal already!
  2. Sign up to help plan and organize our exciting graduation! By getting an early start or this we can learn from the Class of 2025 parents and make our planning smoother!
  3. Volunteer to help with setting up for Class of 2025 graduation events. Every year the Junior Class parents help with set up for Prom and the Grad Party so senior parents can enjoy their students' events. Next year the Class of 2027 will do it for us, so sign up to pay it forward!

We are also looking for parents to help with planning the Spring Raffle (our largest fundraiser!) and with communications to make sure all parents are as informed as possible over the next 18 months. Please reach out to rebekah.brown63@gmail.com if you are interested!

We are looking forward to celebrating our students!

FIRST SENTENCE PARAGRAPH FRIDAY:

"My life was changed forever by a single photograph. It was of a Black female researcher floating underwater with an adorable nurse shark. Nurse sharks are large coastal sharks that like warm waters, like those of southern Florida. Nurse sharks are like cats: they have 'whiskers' — extensions on their lips called barbels — and they are cute and seem cuddly when they want to be, but when they don't want to, boy, they're ready to fight you. I love how fun it can be to just vibe in the ocean with them when they're happy with you."

— from Sharks Don't Sink: Adventures of a Rogue Shark Scientist by Jasmin Graham

As always, if you have any questions, want to find a book, have suggestions, or just want to talk about what you're reading, come see me in the library or send me an email or Teams Chat!
