Dear Residents -

It is going to be another busy weekend. And, for me, it is going to be an early start at the Solace 5K Walk tomorrow. Registration begins at 5:30 am and the walk is at 6:00 am. Solace House provides free, confidential, therapeutic counseling for anyone who is experiencing suicidal thoughts or distress, as well as those who have been bereaved by suicide. To register or for more information, click here.

Tomorrow is also the Orangetown Highway Open House from 10 am to 12 pm. It is a great event, with vendors, trucks, equipment demonstrations and more. And, of course, the Pearl River Farmers Market runs from 10 am to 2 pm at the Central Avenue Field. Wellington Pot Pie’s will be there – if you haven’t tried them, you do not know what you are missing. But get there early, before they sell out.

The Annual Memorial Service at the Rockland County Courthouse on Main Street in New City is also tomorrow at 11 am. This ceremony is hosted by Sheriff Falco every year at the end of National Police Week. Then, at 12 pm, there is the Field of Honor Opening Ceremony. Hosted each year by the Carl A. Schelin Post 1271 of Tappan, NY, in partnership with the Volunteer Fire Association of Tappan and the Tappan Reformed Church, this ceremony recognizes our fallen veterans and active servicemen and servicewomen. It is being held at the Tappan Reformed Church “Manse Lawn,” where over 250 flags will be displayed from May 18th - July 6th.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Carmel Reilly for her work on the Second Annual Golden Gala. It took place last week and was a fantastic day for our seniors, with good food, wonderful music and lots of dancing! The photo booth, sponsored by Sharyn McTigue, was a huge success (just look at the photos below). I am already looking forward to next year when, sadly, I will be age eligible to attend.

Unfortunately, the “Coffee and a Chat” with Piermont Mayor Bruce Tucker that was scheduled for tomorrow is being postponed. Stay tuned for a new date in the following weeks.

So much to do! Whatever you decide, just get out and enjoy.

Regards –

Teresa M. Kenny

Orangetown Police Department

The national seat belt campaign runs from May 20, 2024 through June 2, 2024.

Buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash. We see the results of not wearing a seat belt all the time. We see the injuries and the loss of life which so often could have been prevented if seatbelts are worn.

  • One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up.
  • Buckle up all the time — for short trips and long trips.
  • The right seat belt fit matters:
  • The shoulder belt should lay flat across the middle of your chest and away from your neck.
  • The lap belt should fit across your hips, not your stomach.
  • Never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.
  • Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle; the seat belt slows you down and spreads crash forces over the strongest parts of your body.
  • Despite steady increases in observed seat belt use, approximately half of all passenger vehicle deaths are unrestrained.

Help us spread this lifesaving message. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up.
