Henderson County Chamber Celebrates Achievements in the County: Graduates, Teachers and Future Leaders

05.28.24

As many of you are aware, Henderson County Public Schools have concluded another school year, celebrating many 2024 graduates, their teachers, and much more! We at the Chamber are proud to embrace this special time of year by participating in several exciting events ourselves through our Workforce & Education Division.

In April, we celebrated with Presenting Sponsors AdventHealth Hendersonville and First Citizens Bank, honoring over 250 seniors with the NC Scholar Recognition. These students have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher and met the requirements for a well-balanced, challenging high school program. More information about this special recognition can be found on the Henderson County Public Schools website. Partnered with Boyd Automotive, Henderson Oil Company, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and Publix, this event was heartwarming, with many proud parents, guardians, and students in attendance.

At the beginning of May, we celebrated 23 Teachers of the Year with AdventHealth Hendersonville, Barnette & Coates, and Champion Comfort Experts. Each year, the Chamber and our business community come together to create sweet goodie bags for each teacher, filled with items ranging from coupons and gift cards to practical items. Thank you to all the businesses involved: Baabals Ice Cream, Carolina Ace Hardware, Champion Credit Union, Chimney Rock State Park, Flat Rock Playhouse, Hannah Flanagan’s, Kilwins, Mars Hill University, Mast General Store, Mini Batch Bakery, Willow Hill Soap Company, and Van’s Chocolates!

Lastly, we celebrated the 24th class of the Junior Leadership Program with their own graduation at the beginning of May. We enjoyed hearing from three students as they shared their experiences in the program, handing out their own certificates with a small reception with their families. Thank you to all who have helped throughout this year, from Presenting Sponsors Champion Comfort Experts, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and AdventHealth Hendersonville, to partners BluAxis Realty, Camplify, Chick-Fil-A, Christie’s Lighting Gallery, Egg’s Up Grill, Hampton Inn, Mike’s On Main, and more. Students who participated this year were: Alaina Meyer, Angela Navarro-Valdez, Annabella Marsico, Ansley McGraw, Billy Allen-Justice, Christina Nguyen, Cohen Taulbee, Courtney Collins, Deepika Haywood, Diamond Brown, Elijah Furr, Emily Reynolds, Jocelynn Conningham, Jordan Brown, Kylee Allen, LeeDon Bayne, Sara Kim, Shahbano Khan, Steven Thompson, Tatum Peterkin, and Victor Quebrado Perez.

When to Fire a Non-Performer

Article by WNC Business

05.21.24

I recently got a call from a leader with the challenge that no leader wants to deal with – determining if it's time to fire a non performer. You know this story, as you have most likely been there as leaders.

You hire a person that comes highly recommended, and you are excited to have them on the team. You assign them a role or a territory, and you sit back and wait for them to excel in this new position.

The first month goes by and there’s no results from your new team member. That’s okay, you justify the lack of results to the fact that they are new, and after all it is just the first thirty days. Then the second month goes by and again lackluster results. Again, you justify it by saying it’s just the second month and the results will come.

Then there you are three of four months down the road and still your “new” person is not performing at the level you had hoped for. Now you are getting worried, and you wonder how to handle the situation and if you should fire this non performer.
