New School, New Opportunities:

Litchville-Marion's In-school Child Care Program

Litchville-Marion School District is addressing issues in rural child care head on by starting an innovative in-school child care program. Supported by SEEC's Child Care Aware program and funded through a grant, this full-time, year-round center aims to provide a solution to the community's child care shortage. It will not only support local families and school staff, but it will also have a broader impact on student success and future North Dakota educators.

Verla Jung, CCA Start-Up & Community Engagement Coordinator, and Riley Satterwhite, SEEC Communications Coordinator, connected with Litchville-Marion Elementary Principal Renee Bowen to talk about the ambitious project.

NDMTSS Data Day Protocol: Digging in at the Teacher Level

In an attempt to build capacity across the state, the Central Regional Education Association (CREA) has invited partner REAs to experience this data day analysis process as a growth opportunity to further support schools. Growing Your Elementary Reading Data System is an ongoing team process tailored to establishing a school's protocol for assessing, analyzing, and applying data points throughout the year to inform instruction and intervention.

SEEC and partner REAs work with schools to assist in growing a data system specific to your school through the following process:

  1. Initial survey completion and data team interview
  2. One-hour introductory session for elementary staff and administrators
  3. Creation of a data calendar for F/W/S Data Days following benchmark screening administration
  4. Full Day F/W/S Data Days facilitation
  • Analyze data
  • Determine further diagnostic needs
  • Discussion of possible interventions and routines to meet student needs
  • Forming a data team, building a data calendar, documentation of action steps, and monitoring of the plan will be included in the development of the data system.

Administrator Updates

Aligning Strategy with Operational Impact

At the heart of every successful organization is a well-defined roadmap. Last year, in collaboration with our stakeholders, SEEC underwent a strategic plan update to map our course over the next five years. Grounded in our mission and vision, our strategic plan serves as our guide, outlining our goals and priorities.

Purposeful Strategic Plan Usage

With a revised strategic plan in hand, SEEC has focused on utilizing its plan for three distinct purposes:

  1. Public View: Providing a narrative of our organization's purpose and goals for stakeholders.
  2. Board View: Establishing a governance process for the Governing Board to monitor the agency's progress towards its goals.
  3. Staff View: Serving as an operational guide, aiding decision-making, and goal setting.

Historically, our strategic plan has focused primarily on the public view, communicating our goals to stakeholders. However, through our strategic planning process, we recognized a need for operational and monitoring components, which are crucial to fully executing the organization's strategic plan.

Operationalizing the Vision

Working alongside Dr. Jeff Schatz at Schatz & Associates, LLC, SEEC developed an annual work plan last spring. This plan, approved by SEEC's Governing Board this fall, established monitoring processes for Governing Board Policies, Board/Executive Director Relationship Policies, Executive Director Expectations, and Results Policies. Those policies can be found here.

Bridging Vision and Action

Turning vision into action requires a detailed operational plan. The alignment between the strategic and operational plans ensures that our day-to-day activities are purposeful, contributing directly to the realization of our long-term initiatives. This year, we created our first annual operational plan, aligned to the agency's broader strategic objectives. Many of the activities included within the operational plan are areas identified for continuous improvement during the agency's Cognia accreditation in 2022.

SEEC's Governing Board will receive a report on our progress towards our three Results Policies (below) during our February, April, and June Governing Board meetings.

High Quality & Targeted Supports

SEEC commits to high quality and meaningful programs and services that enhance the education system.

Advancing Relationships

SEEC will work to develop and enhance relationships to inform programming, funding, and policy decisions.

Organizational Development & Operations

SEEC is committed to strengthening its organization to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.

Beyond the accountability that results from the progress monitoring piece, we are committed to strengthening SEEC as an organization, so we can better serve our stakeholders. For those interested in following our progress, SEEC's Governing Board minutes and agendas can be found on our website.
