DONOR INSIGHTS

Charitable Giving Tip

Use your RMD from your IRA through a Qualified Charitable Contribution (QCD) to Maximize Charitable Impact and Minimize Taxes

Maximize charitable impact and minimize taxes by giving the required minimum distribution (RMD) of an IRA through a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), thus avoiding paying taxes on the distribution.

A donor aged 70 1/2 or older can instruct an IRA administrator to send up to $105,000 per year to one or more qualifying charities, excluding donor advised funds. Donors don't report QCDs as taxable income and don't pay any taxes on the QCD, even if they do not itemize deductions. Consult with your tax professional about this tool.

YVCF can assist you in identifying charities, or setting up a designated fund to distribute the annual QCD over a period of up to 5 years to charities that are pre-determined and designated in writing.

To find out how YVCF can help you with your philanthropic goals, and facilitate giving through a QCD, contact Traci Hiatt, traci@yvcf.org.

Announcing...

Passport Club at Creekside!

Thanks to the generosity of the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation, YVCF is excited to announce an expansion of our existing Passport Club Program - the Passport Club at Creekside. This membership includes a Steamboat Silver Medallion (including unlimited First Tracks) or two Steamboat Ski Passes (with 5 First Tracks days per pass) and a locker in the Ski Area’s new Creekside locker room conveniently located adjacent to the Steamboat Gondola. The locker room has a ski valet with space for two pairs of skis, including free ski tunes. Other benefits include night skiing, summer Gondola access, and four days of skiing at Copper Mountain and Winter Park. Parking is not included in the membership.

The Passport Club is the only charitable ski pass/locker program in the Yampa Valley! All net proceeds from the program support YVCF operating and nonprofits in our community through the SSRC’s charitable funds. We couldn’t do the work we do without this support. We are immensely grateful to Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation for this partnership of almost 30 years!

If you are interested in joining or would like to learn more about the program please contact Holly Wilson, holly@yvcf.org.

YVCF Launches Impact Investment Program

The Yampa Valley Community Foundation recently initiated our new Impact Investment Program with a $2.5 million loan to the Craig Housing Authority (CHA), enabling the development of a 20 unit for-sale affordable housing project on 8th Street in Craig, Colorado.

YVCF's involvement in this project was an opportunity for the Foundation to pilot an impact investment after concluding a nearly year-long exploration and education process, culminating on the establishment of the Impact Investment Program. Local impact investments are those made to nonprofits or government agencies with the intention of generating measurable community benefit alongside modest financial returns.

Peter Brixius, Craig City Manager and Executive Director of the Craig Housing Authority praised the relationship: “YVCF quickly assembled a team of experts from insurance, accounting and pro forma development. Not only did YVCF come through with needed, low-cost funding for this vital project, but also became a valuable partner in the planning and development process."

Support Local Nonprofits through YVCF's Community Grants Program

Yampa Valley Community Foundation, in partnership with the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation and through the generosity of donors like you, offers once-a-year grants up to $10,000 to local nonprofits, based on a robust evaluation process. In addition, organizations working on projects for transformational change may be invited to apply for an Impact Grant up to $30,000.

This is only made possible through the support of donor advised fund advisors and private donations to the Community Grants Program.

In 2023, YVCF awarded $541,980 to 70 nonprofits in all sectors - Arts & Culture, Environment, Education, Health & Human Services, Youth, Animals and Recreation. We look forward to another successful year of providing important funding to the nonprofits serving the Yampa Valley. Would you consider a donation to support the Community Grants Program?
