Columbus – Columbus City Council voted on ordinances to approve $8.6 million to go to nonprofit organizations to provide kids and teens with fun summer opportunities to grow in a variety of ways, whether it be through sports, music, gardening, STEM, or employment. This funding is part of a larger commitment to support youth development and empowerment during the summer months and beyond.

“These investments are critical for our community, especially as our youth get out of school with a need to keep moving,” said Councilmember Nancy Day-Achauer, chair of the Neighborhoods, Recreation and Parks Committee. “By providing these resources, we are not only supporting their academic and personal growth but also fostering a sense of belonging and connection within our neighborhoods.”

In addition to the $8.6 million to nonprofit organizations, $12.2 million has been allocated for a range of city-sponsored summer programs. These programs, which include police and fire cadet classes, the Columbus Recreation and Parks APPS Job Readiness Program, summer camps, youth sports, and ongoing partnerships with community organizations, aim to provide diverse opportunities for youth across the city.

The total $20.8 million investment in summer programming underscores the city's commitment to supporting youth development and creating a vibrant and inclusive community for all residents.

“The summer programs we are funding this year are designed to engage our youth in meaningful ways, from exploring new interests to gaining valuable skills like conflict/resolution that will benefit them in the future,” said Councilmember Emmanuel Remy, chair of the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee. “By investing in our youth, we are investing in the future of Columbus, ensuring that our city remains a great place to live, work, and play for generations to come.”
