In response to the vast historical educational inequities, students from the Antelope Valley took the initiative to inform and educate the community during this year's Justice Sunday event on January 14, 2024. The production, Enticed: A Dream Deferred, revisited the often overlooked tragedy of Black Wall Street.
This topic, not commonly found in textbooks, was approached with meticulous research and dedication in three weeks. The students sacrifice their time over winter break to come together in order to write, produce, and perform this play. Jennifer Sanchez, an alumni of the program and PESA’s Assistant Director of Youth Development and Social Justice, states, “The students got into groups and did research on Black Wall Street. Which then turned into them writing, producing, and performing the play all on their own. Justice Sunday Alumni steps in as well to offer guidance throughout their journey.”
The history of Black Wall Street, unveils a harrowing chapter where mobs of white residents attacked Black residents, homes, businesses, and cultural institutions in what was once known as one of the wealthiest Black communities in the United States. During the event, students took center stage to showcase their artistic talents including music, dances, and performances aligned with historical narratives.
The inclusion of diverse talents highlighted the richness of the community and its commitment to showcasing the depth of African American history. Sanchez emphasizes the importance for PESA to be involved with events like this, “because it is our mission to educate the youth. Especially on history that was erased in schools. Through the research and performance these students produce they learn more about Black history. Events like this give us the opportunity to work, inspire, and educate kids district wide.”
Justice Sunday is an annual program that serves as a platform for Antelope Valley youth to learn leadership and performance skills through the writing and production of Black History plays. The process is entirely student-led and PESA is honored to contribute a helping hand in the success of this program.
