LOVE FOR LITERACY

PESA's Commitment to Acts of Service

In this season of love, we at PESA believe that our love language is acts of service—and one of the most impactful ways we express that is by giving back to our community. The recent Love for Literacy event, hosted by Councilmember Imelda Padilla (CD6), was a perfect opportunity to do just that.

The two-day event, held at two different libraries within the district, was designed to promote literacy and encourage a love for reading among students in grades six through twelve. With a variety of engaging activities—including book distribution, arts and crafts, and snacks—the event aimed to create a welcoming environment where young readers could explore their curiosity for literature.

PESA’s Educational Life Coach (ELC), Elizabeth Sosa, emphasized the importance of supporting events like these, stating, “It really reflects what PESA stands for in terms of education. Many kids may be hesitant to go to their local library or even explore reading because of the prevalence of technology and their busy school schedules. Events like this give them a chance to be curious and engage with literacy in a fun and welcoming space.”

At PESA’s booth, our team connected with attendees through interactive games, including a prize wheel where students could spin for candy. Additionally, interns played games like UNO with students, creating a relaxed and engaging atmosphere for meaningful connections. “Just finding out more about PESA and what services we offer to students and families was a very positive experience,” Sosa shared.

Beyond literacy, the event fostered a sense of community and warmth. “It created a safe space for families,” Sosa recalled. “Parents had the opportunity to interact with their children through arts and crafts, which felt like a form of art therapy. It was a moment of bonding that we don’t always see in fast-paced daily life.”

At PESA, we take pride in being part of initiatives that uplift and educate our community. Acts of service like these demonstrate our ongoing commitment to empowering youth and fostering a love for learning. Because at the end of the day, what better way to express love than by investing in the future of our children?
