A New Chapter for the Old Stonewall Jackson Site

Preserving the Past, Planning the Future

Last month, crews from the North Carolina Department of Transportation removed the aging Stonewall Jackson Training School footbridge over Old Charlotte Road in Concord after debris was reported falling from the structure. While the bridge may be gone, the future holds possibility for the iconic property.

To comply with state law, ownership of the property must transfer from the state to Cabarrus County—a move expected soon. The county must honor the site's historic covenants and restrictions, ensuring its history is preserved as best as possible.

Once the transfer is complete, the county plans to pass the property to Preservation North Carolina, a nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding historic places. Preservation NC will add covenants and collaborate with the County to find a partner for redevelopment.

Want to dig deeper into the property's fascinating past and its potential future? Tune in to the latest episode of 'Did Y’all Hear?' and discover more.
