A Message From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we welcome the new year, we’re reminded of the strength and connection that unites our community. At Jessica’s House, we remain committed to creating a space of comfort, understanding, and healing for families in grief.

This month, I'm reminded again of all the good that surrounds us. From our partnership with Stan State to all those who joined the Kayla Bernardi BEE Positive Fun Run and Walk, our community shines in taking good care of each other.

This month, we’re sharing resources, updates, and opportunities to connect, all with the hope of bringing care to your hearts.

Thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you.

Warmly,

Erin Nelson

Executive Director, Jessica's House

Natural Disaster Care for Kids

The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have brought uncertainty and concern to many.

For children, these events can feel especially overwhelming. Open and honest conversations can help ease their worries and provide a sense of safety.

At the link below, we’re sharing tips on how to talk with your kids about wildfires, helping them process their feelings and feel supported during this challenging time.

7 Days to the Launch of When Grief Comes Home

We're 7 days away from the launch of When Grief Come Home. As we count down to our book launch, we are featuring some of the families we've supported over the years at Jessica's House.

Today, we honor the Smallwood family - one of the first families Jessica's House supported.

When Audrey was 7 years old, she told her story about her support at Jessica's House after her dad, Mark, died: "Jessica's house helps me because other people have lost a dad like me. It makes me feel better."

Audrey continued to stay involved with Jessica's House as she grew up, becoming a youth ambassador, volunteer, and later a staff intern. Today, Audrey is attending Boston College and pursuing a career in supporting grieving youth.

You can secure your copy of When Grief Comes Home today and be among the first to receive it when it launches! 100% of proceeds benefit the children and families at Jessica's House. The book is available online at Target, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Baker Book House, and ChristianBook.com

Activity: My Check-In Chart

Materials: Check-In template (download below), colored pencils and markers

Directions:

After someone dies, it’s common to experience many different feelings, sometimes even more than one at the same time, such as feeling sad that your person is gone but also happy when you’re doing something you enjoy. Take a moment throughout the day to notice how you’re feeling. What helps you feel better when you are feeling stressed or worried?

Think about the different feelings you’ve had since your person’s death. Examples could be worried, sad, happy, silly, curious, tired, etc. In each box, draw an image that represents each of those feelings.

Check in as a group again, and if you feel comfortable, share which of your images you are feeling at this moment.
