Albert Mathews, early benefactor of the Library

Started by Annie Sawyer Downs, the Library's first collection of books grew over the years, moved first to the site of a former coffin shop across from what is now Harbor House and later to the site of what was most recently Sawyer’s Market. The collection grew in no small part thanks to the donations of Albert Mathews, a lawyer and later judge in New York City. He stayed regularly at the Claremont Hotel and was a big supporter of the library collection. In 1889, records indicate that 480 of the books and 42 of the volumes in the library were gifts from Mr. Mathews. A year before the Tremont Public Library Association was officially formed on March 17th, 1888.
